I was just wondering if anyone here can give me some info on what is the best paint, companies who make paints or techniques on doing retouches for old wcw galoob figures? I tried a red testors paint on one figure just to test it out and the paint remained tacky/sticky 7 days afterwards. Even now it's still slightly that way. I do not know a lot about paints or which ones are best suited. I'm just learning as I go. I have read a lot of things online, but everyone gives a different opinion and most of the figures are superhero figures, not pvc like the galoob's are. It's frustrating I have to admit.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thaks.

Not a big custom guy, but I know of a lot of people who swear by citadel paints.

Was your testors paint an enamel or acrylic one? I know they make both. The enamels are really bad to use for PVC and can take forever to dry and often feel sticky, which I'm guessing is what you used. I am definitely a citadel guy, though I also use Army Painter and Vallejo for a few colours. (The citadel base white has a relatively short life span to use up compared to their other colours. I have no idea why)

Short story: Picked up Elite 77 AJ today and he had a chip on his boot, on a whim I had some water based paint pens I use for art and decided to try one, it worked well. I tested it and really using my fingernail I could pick it off so it could use a sealer, but I'm not Looking to toss mine around so no reason to worry too much about it personally. If you want to look further; MTN Montana colors water based paint pens, tons of colors.

How do you clear coat seal them without using too much?

and wouldn't acrylic paint feel slightly rough after drying? I know I have used them in the past on a few LJN's.

How do you clear coat seal them without using too much? I use matte mod-podge (the brush on kind not the spray. The spray leaves a really sticky residue feeling on the rubber parts like knee pads). I don't know how to say not to use too much beyond just use it sparingly, the figure shouldn't look like a dipped cone while its drying lol.

Spray is fine. You just do a QUICK BURST. No residue. If you sit there and blast it, yeah it'll be sticky. Mr. Super Clear (in Matte or Gloss) is the best. Expensive though. Acryllic paint is also what you need to use. You need to dilute it! Use multiple coats. Some paints come ready to go with no need to dilute. They have a little ball inside. Shake shake shake!

Summed up perfectly.

Acrylic paints for customs. If you use a good brand of paints like Citadel or Vallejo you wont need to thin them down. Ive painted a couple dozen heads among other custom parts and never had to water down and they're as smooth as a babys ass. Cheap paint like Folk Art or Apple Barrel need to be thinned cause its thick as honey.
I personally hate spray sealers. I use Delta Creamcoat All Purpose brush on sealer. It finishes to the perfect shine/gloss as the Mattel finish.

Thanks guys, some good suggestions here. If I am diluting the paint, how much water with acrylic? I don't want to add too much so that the color itself has a watery look.

If you're using a kind that requires dilution (for a better coat), you want it to be very thin. This means fairly "watery". Don't fret when the first coat does very little. You're going to be doing multiple coats. When you buy a paint that doesn't require dilution, you'll learn how it's supposed to look. Then down the road you can just match. And to answer the first part. Just add a drop or two to the small pea size paint blob you're starting with. Mox it in.

So do you have to dilute every coat? I'm using some apple barrel at this moment on a WWF LJN figure that I picked up that needs serious restoring. I know about apple barrel's quality, but I hear from other collectors who have repainted their LJN's that it works great after clear coating them. Does anyone know what kind of paint they use on the mattel figures? I assume you can't get it, but is there anything that can come close?
