We all know that though pro wrestling and MMA are incredibly different, they do have a common ancestor. And behind all the crazy storylines and wild gimmicks, pro wrestling in the ‘60s and ‘70s was presented as a legitimate sport and wanted as much respect in that venue as MMA gets today. Obviously there’s cooperation in pro wrestling. Obviously moves are done in pro wrestling that could never be done in a real fight. Nevertheless, I feel like there are pro wrestling matches that - if shown to an anti-pro wrestling, “holier than thou” MMA fan - could make them a pro wrestling fan. Which match would you show an MMA fan to try and convert them? Something with Lesnar? Angle? Bret Hart? Steamboat? I’d personally show an MMA fan Lesnar/Angle from WMXIX. I think that was the most sport-like the business has ever gotten. NCAA wrestling champ vs. Olympic gold medalist in wrestling, very technical. And the best part is, Angle was so good on the mic and Lesnar had such a good character, the theatrics of wrestling were still on display in the build-up. I’m proud that such a match was the Mania main event that year.

That’s tricky. Something like Benoit/ Angle from WrestleMania X7 would typically sound like the go to as to appeal to an MMA fans appreciation of true mat wrestling. But I think the closer you get to an MMA wrestling match, the more negative of a reaction they would have to it as it’s not true fighting. It’s still a work and comparably, looks like a work.
I’d show them something totally different, something synonymous to Pro Wrestling. I would show them King of the Ring ‘98, Taker vs Foley because that is crazy no matter what sport you watch. They would understand that yes, this is physical...but also entertaining and bat **** crazy!

some are not going to be able to be convinced, if the reasoning behind liking it or disliking it is fake. but okada/omega would serve as a great way of showing the combination of storytelling and athleticism wrestling features.
I used to show people the dynamite kid/tiger mask tribute video set to journey's 'don't stop believing', that usually made people give a bit of respect towards it.

Your best bet would be to show them some worked shoot matches from UWFI, Pancrase, RINGS, etc from Japan in the 90s. Those guys were doing armbars and leglocks even before UFC 1.

Thatcher vs Riddle in NXT seems like a no brainer. Bryan vs Gulak a few months back would work too.

I don't know, showing an MMA fan "technical wrestling" and "worked-MMA" matches might not be the best look. Probably just going to get the response "If I wanted to watch this, I'd just watch the real stuff."

None. If they don’t like it because it isn’t real fighting than no “fake fight” will get them into it.

I don’t think it was a legit shoot as Angle in reality is probably much better a wrestler than Benoit, I mean he won a Olympic gold medal for real haha. But it was much more of a shoot look than a typical wrestling match. It looked legit but I’m sure both guys were just working a shoot style if you know what I mean.

Wm3 steamboat/savage and hogan vs andre. If that doesnt get them hooked, nothing will. Those 2 matches still hold the test of time...for me

Those 2 matches still hold the test of time...for me maybe to wrestling fans, but showing someone a match from 30+ years ago isn't the best idea. It's like saying "hey you want to get into the UFC? Here, come watch UFC 1."

Early UFC was awesome to me when I was younger. Yeah, but that's not the point I'm trying to make. UFC back then is a lot different than UFC now, just as wrestling in 1987 is a bit different than wrestling in 2020. You'd be better off showing something a little more current. I'd show em something crazy and different. Get 'em goin with maybe TLC from Wrestlemania X-7, which is also almost 20 years old now. Yikes.

Tajiri vs Super Crazy vs Little Guido in ECW. It has a little bit everything, and stiff kicks that will make any UFC fan blush.

It’s hard for me to wrap my head around. Pro wrestling is so heavily story based. I’m sure even a hardcore MMA fan could appreciate the novelty and brutality of a TLC or Hell in a cell match but when it comes to a standard match you’d see on raw, the selling point of the athletic ability doesn’t feel like it would be there in most cases. Obviously guys like Angle or Lesnar or anybody with genuine athletic backgrounds could be the exception.
I did think of a good example after I posted this, so it isn’t to say that these caliber of matches are impossible to find.
