I would have Orton beat McIntyre eventually then run his mouth about being champion again and that he’s a true legend killer again. Have him go on a war path and reign of terror throughout the main roster. Then prior to Survivor Series, I’d have Orton challenge Taker to a WWE Championship match to get him out of retirement. Orton can berate him like Styles did to get him back. Since it’s his 30 year anniversary, I’d have Taker win (could have a distraction by Edge) and defeat Orton to become champion and put an end to Orton’s reign of terror. Either have Taker hold it until the Rumble or relinquish it on Raw. Then have a tournament to crown a new champion or have the Rumble be for the title - Edge returns and wins/screws Orton from winning then heads to their eventual WM rematch. I think it will tie up all the feuds together and by intertwining Taker, you include 2 of his greatest rivals.

Booking wise it would make sense. He's possibly the best WWE champion we've had in years and I couldn't imagine Orton holding the belt for 8 months. At this stage of his career he would be more suited with a short reign. Jinder Mahal was a better champion than McIntyre As much of a fan of Jinder Mahal as the WWE champion, and believe me, i've said my piece on the guy and the reign overall, no

There’s no reason to put the title on Edge when/if he comes back.

Strong disagree, though. At least Drew can have pretty good matches.

I'm assuming Edge handpicked Randy as his first opponent back. Someone he trusted in the ring to keep him safe. Now the story has to play out. Once it does, I'm thinking we get an Edge vs Rollins feud next. They could bring up when Rollins tried to hurt Edge years ago, so it has some backstory.

Orton is the perfect person to hold the belt during this pandemic. He's better as the methodically, sadistic heel. Use him with no crowds, because even if you get silence his attacks and promos don't need a crowd. Put him in a few fueds that take a couple months each, and he doesn't have to be there every week. Drew isn't getting the charisma displayed that was starting to come out before covid. Have Orton take the belt to Mania where Edge takes it off him. Have Edge in a multi man match a few months later with someone taking the pinfall and not him. You set the rematch for Edge up by having someone cost him the match, which sets up his next fued. He's a part timer, so you can easily set it up with him being cost the title he fought so hard to win again. It's emotional, and driven.
My booking would be like this.....
Orton beats Drew at Summerslam
Orton beats Drew in the rematch at the next PPV in a stipulation match that protects Drew.
Orton fueds with a heel to keep his reign going, someone that you are thinking about switching. They run that Nov-Jan to the rumble. Edge does not win the rumble though
Orton has a small one off fued with an up and comer from NXT. Someone that gets the rub somehow. Set it up in a backstage segment at the rumble or what not.
Edge is the surprise entrant into the Raw EC match. He wins...and you have your Wrestlemania match.
Edge wins at Mania to get his big full circle moment.
Edge loses in a multi man match to a Seth Rollins. He covers Orton for the pin perhaps.
Next PPV when Edge is close to winning the belt back from Rollins......you get your BIG KO Heel Turn, but to the KO we always wanted. You get Kevin Steen ass kicker type. He attacks Edge, and gives an amazing promo on working so long to get here, never being used to his potential, always doing what management asked on or off screen because he didn't want to lose his dream job. He realized what got him here, was who he once was. He would have never ran from anyone before he got here, and now he does it because everyone thinks the bad guy is a coward. I'm not a coward. I'm the guy who kicks your ass, and doesn't care about it afterward. Edge came back when he should have stayed away. He's not mad that Edge came back and added to his legacy, his pissed that Edge got to come back and do it his way....while KO has to team with people he doesn't like, use moves he hates, and have people like Goldberg come in and be told "this will be better for you in the long run Kev". The long run is now, and I'll be damn if I let anyone tell me who I am anymore.
You get a monster heel in Owens who can carry matches and promos, Edge gets to give him the rub, and allow Drew to potentially come back around after Mania and take the belt off of Rollins or someone else where he can get a better run.

The matches that need to happen
AJ Styles Seth Rollins *cue 4/10, hurt sting, bret hart references* Daniel Bryan
Then let the Fiend send him back to a past gimmick. Retired.

I haven't minded the Orton/Edge angle. Definitely preferred their Backlash match to their WrestleMania match. Obviously it would have been ideal to round things out in their trilogy for SummerSlam this year but I think the fact that Edge was injured in their second match adds a bit more drama to the storyline.
That said, I really hope Orton doesn't win and hold the belt up until WrestleMania for their next rematch. If they go that route WWE will have wasted what they've done for Drew since the Rumble. He really has been a great champion and it would be a shame if they prematurely cut his reign. They've done a great job with making Drew look like an intense, strong, and proud world champion without things feeling too forced.
The only way I think it could work is if Orton has a 2-3 month reign with the belt, but ultimately landing back on Drew with support from Edge at whatever PPV is in October/November (Hell in a Cell or Survivor Series?). Then have Drew carry the belt for the remainder of the year and into WrestleMania 37.
