I don't think genres are needed as far as a LABEL on something goes. However, I think it is very useful for seeking out new music for your preferred taste. Yeah two bands of the same genre can sound totally different, but at least it generally gives you an idea of what to expect.

Look at Neil Young for example, Not all of his albums have the same musical format. In the 80s when he was signed with Geffen Records, he put out albums that weren't like his previous works. If you know Neil Young, he's always been a Hippie type. The Geffen years included a Rockabilly album called Everybody's Rockin' it has a 50s sound to it. It's a strange album but it wasn't the genre Neil Young Fans were used to. He also had an electronic/Synth album in the 80s as well, called Trans. Anyway Geffen Records sued Neil Young for making albums that didn't sound like the usual Neil Young albums he would put out. Geffen lost the lawsuit.
Neil Young also had an R&B/Blues album in the 80s called This Note's For You where he won a VMA for Video of the Year after the fact that MTV banned the video.

Short story: Trans and Everybody's Rockin' rank in my top 5 of favorite Neil Young records. The long: I used to have a group of friends that would select an artist a month to listen and rank the entire discography of. We would get together on the last Friday or Saturday and talk about it. We were nerds of music, movies, and books and loved making lists so we did this every month. When we covered and ranked Young, I was the only one that had anything by him from the 80s in the top 5. One of my friends had Old Ways in their top ten.

People were booing at Neil Young when he came out dressed like a 50s rocker.

Yes I think they are. That doesn’t mean you can’t like different genres. I like a few of them. But one thing I hate is radio stations playing drastically different genres in back to back songs. Really I just wish radio would stick to one genre per station unless it’s currently considered pop

are they needed to create music? nope. scales, keys, and timing signatures are more on the required list.
genres are only needed because people feel the need to put everything in boxes so they can define what they're experiencing.

We recently did a week on concept albums and someone added Hold On To Your Love, We R In Control and Transformer Man from Trans by Young. I was so taken aback by the different sound from him. I really dug it.

I really dug it. It's an interesting time period for Young that's for sure. Trans has an interesting backstory involving the therapy that he was helping his son with. I hate that everything from this period is owned by Geffen so some material we will probably never hear. And I love when artist go out of their comfort zone.
