Howdy folks, I know I am a few weeks late, but I wanted to talk about the first X-Men movie. It is kind of crazy to think that the movie is 20 years old as I write this and if you ask me if it was not for that and the first Blade, you could make the argument that comic book movies may not have become what they are today.
At the time this movie came out I was 18 years old. I was lucky in that I grew up with a dad who loved comic books when he was a kid so it was something I always had an interest in. To be honest, it was his pushing of the comics on me that got me really invested in the Marvel animated shows of the early 90s. I can still hear him complaining about what they did to Morbius in the Spider-Man animated series as I write this! Anyway, I had not been to the movies with my old man since Batman Forever in 1995! The reason for this is that I was a teenager and while I loved my dad, I thought I was too cool to go to the movies with him and would go with my friends or a girlfriend at the time instead.
However, X-Men was something different, there was no way in hell I could go and see that movie with anyone but him. He was like a 9 year old kid with how excited he was. He would buy any movie magazine that he could find that had anything to do with the movie and we had only had the internet a short while before this, but it was this X-Men movie that turned him into an internet user. I remember there was this secrecy at first about the costumes and it was driving him nuts to know what they would look like. I remember here in the UK there was a special about the making of it on Sky One and there was also another special on QVC where they were selling merch from the movie and for some reason he felt compelled to buy this Statue of Liberty head playset and a couple of figures! He thought he was going to put this thing in the living room, but my mum was having none of it!
I loved the first movie and so did my dad. I really cannot think of anything that they could have done better in all honesty, we both had a great time and his only complaint was that Wolverine was far too tall. It is kind of funny to think about how short he was in the comics and how he was on the big screen, but Hugh Jackman nailed it. I liked all o the cast actually and the movie holds up pretty well to this day. It is a fun movie that moves at quite a quick pace and it was a great way to bring the X-Men to the big screen. You have to wonder what comic book movies would be like had X-Men been released and the movie had bombed! I know it sounds cheesy, but the best thing about this movie for me was not the comic book movie boom it was partially responsible for, but the fact I got to go with my dad who was like a kid the whole time.
What are your memories and thoughts of the first X-Men movie?

I think IIRC that I went with our summer camp to see it for the first time. I definitely didn’t grasp the importance at the time of what pretty much became the launching point for the new era of comic book movies. I mean if you look at the unreleased Fantastic Four movie trailer from ‘94 and then X-Men from 2000, you’d think that was way more than a 6 year difference for Marvel.

Recently watched this and X2 back to back...really enjoyable experience. X2 remains one of my favourite comic book movies...Pity about X3 & Wolverine(although they did have some good points) & the proposed X4.
First Class for me is a good watch but there's parts of it that effin grate on me. DOFP a acracker....Apocalypse & Dark Phoenix are watchable...kinda.
Logan & the Deadpool movie are crackers obviously.
Slightly OT? But Blade was so important...it made studio execs take notice because it made big $$$ for a R Rated movie and did huge home sales.

Saw it in theaters, yes I’m old. I had nightmares about Sabertooth after his introduction scene,

I have liked them all, I think X-Men 3 is the only one that I am iffy on. My favorite is Days of Future Past. I think The Wolverine is fantastic too and the image of Logan in that Japanese village at night is so badass. By the way, the wife and I went to see New Mutants and it was pretty fun. It is not the greatest movie or anything like that, but it was a fun popcorn movie kind of watch. I do no want to spoil anything, but I was kind of pissed that it once again teased a certain character that I know we will not be getting as this X-Men franchise is now done. Also, I cannot believe that this movie was completed like two years ago! It was our first outing to the cinema since Onward in March and it was kind of weird. We were the only people in our screen and this dude came in not once, not twice, but three times to wipe down the railing that went up the stairs! It was super annoying and took me out of the movie, I get it if more folks were in the theatre, but there was literally only us two so I am not sure why it needed wiping down three times in the space of a couple of hours. We only had to wear our masks when we walked into the cinema, we were told that when we were sitting down it was ok to take them off. I loved Blade! I was too young to see it in the cinema when it came out, but I watched the hell out of it on video.

For me, seeing X-Men is 2000 was like seeing Endgame in 2019. Thats how big it felt.

But then you had Juggernaut, Mystique getting depowered, the convolution of Phoenix & 100 other things that crapall over the stuff it nailed. Mess of a movie. Also Ratner gets far too much blame for it. Vaughn gets so much fanboy love for stuff but a lot of the shite ideas he had for this remained in the movie.....

I remember being unhappy about the costumes. I wanted Wolverine in blue and yellow lol. Obviously, X-Men was fantastic. I enjoyed all the X-Men movies that have come out in some fashion. Can't wait for more.

X2 rules. Apocalypse has a bad rap but is decent.

It’s been 33 years of X-Men for me (started reading when I was 6 I’m 1987) but it was HUUUUUUUGE for me when the movie came out.

Stan Lee didn't have a cameo in that unreleased Fantastic 4 movie.

20 years ALREADY!? I remember watching this in theaters and buying the figs at KB Toys next to our movie theater. X2 still holds u, but it's really sad what came of X3. So much potential for that movie that wasn't reached. Glad my childhood superhero movies that I loved weren't clouded with nostalgia glasses haha. Gonna have to revisit the first one again today!

I was super pumped when it came out and super disappointed after the movie. I haven't seen it since I saw it in theaters, so maybe i should give it another shot now, but back then I had super high expectations from Singer and he just didn't deliver for me.

You should definitely revisit it man. It was such a great palette cleanser after Batman& Robin(which I love. It is what it is) pretty much killed the idea of a big budget film in that genre. The themes were treated seriously and showed that a comic book film didn't have to be a cartoon. I actually re watched it today because of this thread and it still holds up.

I watched Dark Pheonix again yesterday & I have to say...I enjoy it more than Apocalypse. If you take out the bizarre alien stuff, Dark Phoenix might be the most "X-Men" X-Men movie. It's not as bad as people say. I haven't gone back to watch the first three X-Men movies in a while. I'm kinda scared tbh. I had fun watching them in the theaters and while I know they're not perfect, it'd suck to find that they're as bad as the recent ones.

Man, 20 years? I remember making plans to go see this after school the week it came out. I had to go to summer school in order to get my credits in line to go to high school (I was technically already there, but my city kept freshman in the middle schools at the time, even though you were already earning high school credit), and my punishment for having slipped so far was being forced to get myself there and back. I lived about five miles from the school and had only just turned fifteen, so I had myself a 25 minute bike ride each way. The day me and my buddy were going to go to the theater after class, we came out to find our bikes, along with all the others locked up, picked clean...seats, wheels, and chains all missing. I had to call my mom and basically grovel, but she agreed to drive us to the theater after coming to get us and what was left of our bikes.
It's funny how you can peg certain movies to a place, a time, and the circumstances surrounding them. I've seen a ton of these movies in theaters, but I couldn't tell you with much certainty about the days I saw them, but I'll always remember the little details of that day and going to see that movie, right down to things that were said and done throughout the day.
