What If: The Ultimate Warrior Was Happy With His WrestleMania 7 Pay Off? Ok, so my last What If about RVD was a dud, but I think this one will get things back on track. As a kid, I loved the Ultimate Warrior and at SummerSlam 1991 I thought it was so freaking weird that he never came back to the ring to celebrate with Hulk Hogan. Of course, we now all know that he was not happy with his pay for WrestleMania VII and held Vince up for money before the match leading to him being fired (or him quitting if you believe his story). What if, he got his cheque for WrestleMania VII and was happy with it? I think this would have dramatically changed the WWF in the short term at least. To start with, he would have continued his feud with Jake Roberts. I really liked this as a kid and as cool as it would have been to see this continue, it means that we would have lost the awesome Jake Roberts, Randy Savage feud! So while Warrior had this program, what would have happened to Randy Savage? Would he have still been reinstated? You also have to wonder how long would the Warrior have lasted after SummerSlam 1991? By all accounts his ego was out of control during this time so would he have been fired for something else shortly after? Unless they were able to stretch that Jake Roberts feud out until WrestleMania I have a hard time seeing what else they could have done with the Warrior. Which if they did that, then what happens to The Undertaker? I think Warrior not being mad about his pay at WrestleMania VII and competing at SummerSlam without a chip on his shoulder would have had a massive ripple effect on the WWF, for the short term at least. In the long term, if Warrior sticks around does Vince start pushing “smaller” guys like Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels? I would love to read your thoughts on what would have happened had Warrior not been fired at SummerSlam 1991. |

I think Taker/Jake still crash Macho's wedding and with that we get the big showdown at SSeries with it being Jake/Taker vs Mach/Warrior.Both babyfaces would then have common enemies plus you can have the build being can they co exist considering their past.
Not sure where that leaves Sid and Hogan though.I doubt they turn Sid heel so soon considering Vince had big babyface plans for em so wouldve been interesting what they did.
In the end Warrior leaving when he did was for the best as we got Jake/Savage.Such a classic timeless feud that worked out for the better at the end of the day.

Warrior sucked. His promos were blabbering nonsense and he really couldn’t sell his opponents.
Hogan would have come back to take the title eventually and Sid, Yoko, and taker could hold it meanwhile. (Even savage)

I loved Savage vs Jake, him getting bit by a snake was one of the most shocking things I saw back then. |

He probably would have had an interesting feud with Jake Roberts before being back in the title picture. I wish he would have turned heel and had a rematch with Hogan at WM 7.

Hard to fathom, Warrior leaving gave us the great feud between Jake and Savage. I have heard that the only reason Macho came back so early was because they needed another big name to take Warrior's place. So, had Warrior not been fired, I don't think we would have gotten Savage/Jake - at least not at that time. If Savage stays heel on the mic, maybe we could some how get a Hogan/Warrior/Sid vs Jake/Taker/Savage - that would have been cool.
If Warrior stayed, and they still did the Jake/Taker interrupting Savage's wedding angle (to get Sid over as a new top babyface), I could see Warrior and Sid facing off against Taker and Jake throughout the fall of 1991. Then they could have had the Survivor Series match of Jake/Taker/Natural Disasters vs. Warrior/Sid/LOD. With Sid getting injured at that time, that could have been the place to bring back Savage. Warrior asking for Savage's help (since they now both despise Jake and Taker) would have been interesting. Since Warrior was the one to "retire" Savage, maybe he could be the one to bring him back. This would leave Hogan without an opponent. They maybe could have extended the Hogan/Sarge angle a little longer and had Sarge face Hogan at Survivor Series for the final time, maybe in a desert storm match. For the rumble, I would have Hogan face Taker for the WWF title, Flair can win the rumble match giving him the match at Mania to face Hogan for the WWF Title. Sid could screw Warrior out of the Rumble match like he did Hogan, thus getting Warrior vs. Sid at WM8. Continue the feud with Jake and Savage with the final match happening at WM8. This would leave Taker without an opponent at WM8 unless they gave him some random guy to squash to keep him strong, maybe the Texas Tornado. They could also have Taker save Savage and Liz from Jake, at WM8 just do the same thing they did at SNME where Jake was going to hit Savage and Liz as the came back through the curtain. This could start a feud between Jake and Taker after WM8.
New WM8 Card: Winner in Bold:
HBK vs Tito (save the feud with Jannetty for later)
Undertaker vs. Tornado
Piper vs Bret (IC Title)
Repo/Mountie/Nastys vs Duggan/Sarge/Virgil/Bossman
Jake vs Savage (maybe in a street fight or snake pit match)
Model vs Tatanka
Money Inc. vs. LOD (WWF Tag Titles Match)
Sid vs. Warrior (Papa Shango interferes)
Skinner vs Owen
Flair vs. Hogan (WWF Title Match) (Sid interferes to start a feud with Hogan)

I like the idea of Warrior and Savage taking on Undertaker and Jake, but that then throws up the question of who faces Hulk Hogan for the title at Survivor Series? I loved Savage vs Jake, him getting bit by a snake was one of the most shocking things I saw back then. I'd give the nod to Warlord believe it or not as a one off.I remember them teasing him going after Hogan and the belt that year so it would fit. |

Changes an awful lot of stuff....1st off? I wonder would Savage have been unretired at all. If Warrior is at his disposal? I don't see it. Its been noted a few times that his departure nuked Vince's plans for late 91/early 92 .& made him do stuff he previously hadnt considered.
I think we def get Warrior vs Flair at some point...likely for the title. With Hogan leaving Vince would def go down this road. However....with the steroid scandal looming? Hellwigs days in WWF were numbered.
When he returned after WM8 he was notably smaller to the point where folks thought he was someone else BUT that wasnt enough. As we seen when Vince canned him & Bulldog

Honestly I figure that Warrior would have found something else to complain about before long and would have walked. After a certain point, like after he first dropped the title, I don't think that he was employable long term. He wanted to be treated like a massive, promotion carrying star but he was below that level.

Obviously, if Warrior stayed, he would have been Vince's guy for a couple of years. There's no way that the set-up from WM6 was meant to be merely a short-term boost for Warrior. Vince was clearly thinking about life without Hulk.
However, I feel that his departure from the WWF was inevitable. Even if money and the impending steroid fallout hadn't been factors, Warrior still wouldn't have been the 1990s answer to Hogan. I've read/heard enough about his initial run in the WWF to believe that he was an introverted guy, which led to the constant travel and ongoing appearances wearing him out psychologically. It was a similar situation to that of Brock Lesnar, but at a time when Vince wasn't accommodating part-timers. Better paydays would have been short-term fixes, I believe.

He enters a feud with Jake Roberts. The wheels for that were already in motion. I'm guessing there would have been tag matches with Warrior/Hogan Vs Roberts/Undertaker and Sid/Flair would have been incorporated into the mix somehow...

Dude needed to buy a house plain and simple, that's all it was. He needed more money to buy it. Wish he didn't have to write that letter.
I'm sure Warrior could've discussed it with Vince that he was unhappy. Hogan was good at least from my understanding of telling Vince "this cheque doesn't look right brother" when he had a problem with money.
