Hahaha, there's some hardcore revisionist history going on here. It's amazing what a downward couple of final years can do to a collective memory. For real. People have passed down this narrative that Jakks was always terrible and that we had Rey figures the size of Big Show and that literally never happened. It's also amazing how different the reaction to bad figures coming out is compared to the Jakks era. During the RA/CS era, people would regularly want Jeremy put in front of the firing squad for stuff like Chinese New Year or the NWA Hawk/LOD 2000 Animal with the promise of doing NWA Animal later and never getting to it but if Mattel puts out a Bret Hart in  ing orange or they can't do one head sculpt that even kind of looks like him after 10 years, people defend it. It's so weird to me. There was a point, like 2007-2008, where Jakks had figures in almost every scale imaginable (2", 3.75", 6", 7", 12" 16") and also had a McFarlane Sportspicks style line and had a variety of stars from a variety of eras coming out in several of those scales. They're literally the only wrestling figure company ever to do that, and most of the figures during that era were good, if not great. People really let how hard Jakks went down the crapper in late 2008-2009 rewrite how good the previous few years before that were. They went further to cover general wrestling history than Mattel have, too. I mean, I pretty much defend Mattel at most passes, but a) I wasn't collecting during most of the CS run when Jeremy was at the helm, and b) I'm notoriously forgiving in regard to figure design because for me it's just for fun and I try to remain as passive a collector as possible. I just like toys and figures. The Jakks BCA line is still my all time favorite, and some (read: a lot) of those were hideous, but damnit, they were fun. |

Just a really cool, unique figure. Blue Blazer is where I think I developed my forgiving nature...as much as I love the figure, I cringe to think how the 2020 WF message board would receive it, but damned if there wasn't a figure I'd have given up at 14 to get my hands on a repainted Bret with a repurposed Patriot head. I still need a red Yoko, but the white does the trick for now. |

Don't get me wrong, I loved Jakks growing up but as I got older I see the imperfections in the line. My point with LJN, Hasbro and Remco was that Jakks had enough time to evolve since those lines. Hasbro was putting out toys with just as much articulation and good or better details than Jakks. Remco was doing real clothing accessories like 20 years before Jakks and LJN, even though they were one solid toym weren't putting new heads on the same old bodies.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Jakks growing up but as I got older I see the imperfections in the line. My point with LJN, Hasbro and Remco was that Jakks had enough time to evolve since those lines. Hasbro was putting out toys with just as much articulation and good or better details than Jakks. Remco was doing real clothing accessories like 20 years before Jakks and LJN, even though they were one solid toym weren't putting new heads on the same old bodies. Hasbro's articulation definitely wasn't on par with even the earliest Jakks offerings. Even Hasbro's best-case releases had fixed legs, minimal arm articulation (usually hampered by an action feature), and rotating heads. I know people worship the ground they laid, but pretending like Hasbro to Jakks was some giant leap back into the stone age is refusing to see past one's own rose colored glasses. |

Jakks was consistant in the quality of figures they put out. IF the set was trash they all were, not just one random figure. But the opposite can be said too! I still love the jakks classic superstars line, the first 10 lines were absolutely amazing. Also, the variety of types of figures and styles as well as the amount of different people they made was amazing. |

OK, here's my two cents five dollars
I'm going to explain this with a story involving someone with next to no extent wrestling knowledge whatsoever. If you need proof, I randomly started ranting to her about Charlotte two nights ago and she was shocked to find out Ric had children because, and I quote "Isn't Ric Flair gay???"
So, now that we've gotten that hilarity out of the way, as many of you know, I'm on a quest to collect one of every single women's wrestler/diva/manager/valet/etc they ever made a figure out of.
So, I was perusing the Bay last night, and I got so frustrated. Because I really want a Melina figure. I don't care much at all about her in general, but I have standards, and she's on my list, so I was looking.
The The cheapest Melina figures are the blue attired RA figure. Boring attire, lackluster head, not much to look at there. Not worth the purchase.
But then you get into the Mattel figures. And you get the Wrestlemania Heritage figure. The head is somehow worse than the low-end Jakks and the attire, while better, has that horrible basic top molding from the early Basics. Still pass.
There is the pink Basic 5 Mattel figure, but it has the same head, admittedly a better attire, but it costs almost 10-20 dollars more for loose.
SO, where does that leave us with the figure to get?
The Limited Edition "Main Event" Figure
The Main Event Melina figure blows every single other Melina figure out of the water from both companies. And yes, it's a JAKKS.
Now to pull in the person who knows nothing about wrestling. I showed her pictures of the Main Event Melina and the WM Heritage Melina. Her response.
The one in gold looks like Andre the Giant mated with Human Shrek
The one in the skirt is gorgeous though.
There you go. Words spoken from an untrained eye. From someone who has no knowledge of characters, prejudice against line history, or any preconceptions, She pointed at the Jakks and said "That's far better"
Naturally, that dang Main Event Melina figure is a fortune to find in good, complete condition, but it's the one I hope to someday add to my collection.
This is just one example. And trust me when I say that when Jakks did poorly, it stunk up the house. But when they struck gold? It was glorious and, well, seeing as how hard it is to wrangle RA Era figures from Mattel, you're probably better getting the RA Jakks figures because who knows when if ever we'll be getting, say, a WM23 HBK?
And the classic superstars line?
Still classic.

I loved that Melina with the furry boot covers - I remember finding it one time (Online) for like $7 so I got three of them so my white MnM could have furry boot covers - I still have the 3 of them all decked out today and dare I say those covers made the mercury and nitro figures so much better.
So I agree that Melina in white/jean skirt was done so well especially since no toy company hits females out of the park every time or even at all, its almost no wonder so many women have body issues if toy designers think some of these figures actually resemble them.
I would think Rene Young would have nightmares over her figure and video game model lol.
