Never had an issue with it as a Brit. It's no different to all the countless US hero characters waving the American flag.
It's wrestling, stereotypes have been ingrained since the start. It's timeless.

Remember when Michael Cole was Knighted by the Queen of England Impersonator? Remember when a Queen Elizabeth impersonator was dissing Davey Boy Smith & praising the Warlord? Then on CCTV, it showed her & Bobby Heenan getting drunk together backstage?

I think there's a lot of aesthetics involved with it as well. You have to remember WWE always likes their stars to stand out and not be "bland"...im not saying this to be disrespectful but the St George flag looks like an ambulance that lost its wheels. The union jack stands out and has a lot of "pop" and design to it. Also even in wrestling the English/British are typical seen as allies to Americans. Both the Union Jack and Old Glory uses the same color scheme and I think that helps the British get over more as faces in the US. This. I think of bands as well. Iron Maiden and Sex Pistols were/are English, but the Union Jack is so iconic.

I don't know how specific this is just to WWE. I think a lot of it comes down to the talent. Seen plenty of English talent working around the world, where the company isn't choosing their gear, and they have the UK flag on their tights, and not the English one. Zack Sabre Jr. and Jack Gallgher (pre-gentleman gimmick) come to mind for modern people. Know Ive seen other indy guys as well.

Birming-HAM is the one that grinds me the most. I realise there’s a Birmingham in Alabama but we don’t pronounce it the same way. The cockney/southern English pronunciation of Birmingham bothers me way more than the way the Americans say it. At least the Americans remember it’s got a G in it.

I think it’s an American representation of the UK rather than WWE itself. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the flag of St. George appear on anything American I have watched on TV. The pronunciation of the UK’s towns & cities is my biggest bugbear with WWE. Glasg-OW, Nor-FOLK, Nor-WICH all do my nut in. Yeah, but that's just down to a combination of silly US pronunciation, and ignorance. That goes for any word, they can make sound different, to how we pronounce it. We know it's not pronounced like that - but most Americans don't.

Probably our own fault for not calling it the English Empire in the first place.

And to be fair, those are how we pronounce the towns of the same name here in the US.... And sometimes two towns can have the same name and be pronounced very different. English is an f'd up language no matter where you are speaking it, lol.

Dave Gorman did a great piece on the show Modern Life Is Good-ish about the name of Loughborough University. Basically said that because "ough" had several different pronunciations, and the two in Loughborough are both different, can you imagine a foreign exchange student coming to that University for the first time, with English not being their first language, and seeing that name? Dave then suggested that it could be Low Brow University which was quite clever word play.

The pronunciation of the UK’s towns & cities is my biggest bugbear with WWE. A lot of the pronunciations are because of lack of education on how they're pronounced but a lot needs to be blamed on complete laziness as well. I try to at least find out how they are suppose to be pronounced. I work with people that call Tehran, Iran "Tear-an, I-ran"

We pronounce things certain ways because they have letters in them. Which is ironic...

Scottish & Welsh national identity is much stronger than English. I imagine the Scottish wrestlers in question would have had a preference for Scottish iconography, whereas if you asked the average English person whether they'd rather use the flag of St. George or the Union Jack they probably wouldn't give a s***.
