So I've been watching some old nitros lately and I happen to come across the June 24th Nitro, Watch the end of the triangle tag match between Harlem Heat Steiners and Sting/Luger. When the outisders make their appearance with the ball bats and after Luger gets rolled up, watch Sting. All the other wrestlers besides Heat who are celebrating their victory are starring down the outsiders, while Sting is way behind them kinda just not standing up for WCW. I figured this was a clue that maybe storyline wise commentators would look back on to point out clues that Sting was indeed the 3rd man. I feel like the seeds were being planted until as Nash would say, "Hogan saw that money train leaving, but it was not moving that fast".

I think either way the NWO would have worked.
If Sting had turned, fans would definitely hate that he turned his back not just on WCW - to align with WWF guys which is a company he said he would never go to (at that time) - and not just that but he turned his back on all the little Stingers.
But Hogan turning and going with Nash and Hall made a lot more sense when you look at where Hogan made his career and all his money at. He was the perfect guy to be with two ex WWF stars trying to invade WCW.

Bischoff has said Sting was plan B if Hogan got cold feet.It no doubt wouldve still had that big shock factor but at the end of the day I'm glad it was Hogan.
Best heel turn of all time.

I'm partial to Ole turning on Dusty in the cage, but in terms of impact and importance to wrestling there's no doubt Hogan's turn takes the top heel cake. |

Sting would have not been as good of a choice as Hogan. Period.

I think the nWo would have been successful with Sting as the third man, but it wouldn’t have been nearly as big as it was with Hogan. That heel turn by Hogan was nearly 15 years in the making. Nobody, not even Sting, turning heel would have shocked the wrestling world like Hogan did.
And if it was Sting, we know that Hogan would have likely beat them all by the end of the year.

Yeah I give it to the end of 1996, maybe the spring at the latest before Hogan uses his creative control to beat the nWo and leaving the angle dead in the water. Besides the shock of Hogan turning heel, another reason why it was so successful was that WCW seemed to be in a loosing battle which raised the stakes for the fans. With Sting having seemingly walked away from WCW, and Giant and Savage both joining the nWo, it left guys like Luger and the Horsemen as the only ones to defend WCW’s name. With Sting as the third man, the nWo likely beats up on Savage, Luger, and Flair for a few months before Hogan takes them down to save WCW. |

Sting was one of those thought of and Hogan was still hesitant the last minute. All it took was for someone to convince Hulk that it was a bad idea and he wouldn't have done it.
I would've loved the idea of Sting turning heel and joining the nWo. Would've been something and probably would've been a good run for him too as the top heel in WCW.
