I know this has been discussed on multiple mediums 1000 times over. But it can never be overstated. The WHAT chant is, in my opinion, the worst thing to ever happen to pro-wrestling. That may sound hyperbolic. But in all honesty, it’s not. I was around 13 years old when it started and I thought it was stupid as then and it’s stupid as now. And I’ll forever hate Steve Austin for it. Yeah, I guess the bald bastard saved WWF in the Monday Night Wars and yes he was entertaining in the year of 1998... but seriously... him. Between him creating that chant, politicking to destroy the NWO’s WWE run because he was jealous, and also beating his wife, Steve Austin can get bent... along with every fan who keeps that chant alive. I LOOOOOVVVVEEEEEE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!

I enjoyed stone colds promos designed for the crowd to yell "WHAT?!" more than anything he did in the attitude era 😄

I agree, it’s terrible and can ruin some segments that would be otherwise great.
Haven’t heard of him politicking to end the NWO’s WWE run. Anyone care to share about this?

I never minded it. As the quality of the WWE went down over the years, the “WHAT?” chants always gave me a chuckle. If the WWE gave us more characters and stories to care about i don’t think the chant would be so prevalent. I see it as similar to when the fans chanted the “rumble countdown” buzzer sound during the Rollins/Ziggler iron man match from a few years back. Had we been given something to care about I doubt the fans would have done it.

This should be in the classic board. Feels like it's been about 5 years since we had a crowd.

I wouldn't say he politicked to end the nWo run. None of the top guys wanted to work with them, which is why we got Taker vs. Flair and Triple H vs. Jericho. Austin didn't want to face Hogan at WrestleMania because he felt like Hogan would turn the crowd against him, which is exactly what happened with the Rock. He didn't want to work with Hall, because he saw that as a demotion, which it definitely was. Hall being a mess all the time certainly didn't help, and the fact that Hall was gone like a month after Mania just helps Austin's case. The nWo in the WWE was doomed from the start. It ended with Nash's injury, not because of Stone Cold politicking. If people want to blame Austin for the nWo not working out, they need to blame everybody but the Rock for not wanting to work with them. On topic, I love the What? chants. It's the most reaction from the crowd most people were getting when people were in the stands. It's better than people sitting in silence, which is what happens when most people come out.

You’re leaving out a significant event. Hall was supposed to go over Stone Cold at WM. Then Austin bitched about it and VM changed his mind the night before. Scott hit the bar that night for the first time in a long time. And um... top guys not wanting to work with the NWO is a form of politicking. Fact is they were terrified of the fact that the NWO was more over than anyone in the company. Anyways, the what chant. I LOOOOOVEEEEE YOUUUUUUU

What a mistake that would have been. I don't necessarily think the top guys didn't want to work the with nWo guys because they were jealous. Hogan, Hall, and Nash had just returned after basically killing WCW with all of their politicking. I wouldn't want to work with those guys either and deal with their crap.
