Watched the new Icons series on the Network last night with Yoko being the first covered and man it was a great near hour and a half. Nothing I didnt already know but it was great seeing his whole career covered plus rare footage of em behind the scenes.Definitely recommend it if you have the Network.
For his size man could he move around the ring. Loved his run as WWF champ in 93.His feuds with Bret and Taker plus his tag run with Owen will always be my fav from his career.

Honestly one of my favorite all time heel champion reigns. He was so damn good. It’s crazy to think he wasn’t much older than I am now when he passed.

Renamed the thread to focus on the Icons series itself.
Really looking forward to the Bulldog episode.

Great show on a great big man. It's funny how people and magazines back then used to complain when he was champ that he was slow and used too many rest/nerve holds. I think the fact that vader was running as champ in WCW at the same time made people draw comparisons as they were both big guys. Yoko was never meant to be or move like the 123 kid or vader and was exactly what a monster heel was meant to be. Looking forward to more shows in the Icons series - if only wwe would do more shows like this.

I wonder how his life would have turned out if he had come in to WWF as another Samoan and not the sumo wrestler. The whole sumo gimmick was him being huge whereas the other Samoan family members were just big but not obese. I know Yoko was pretty big even in the 1980s and in the clip I saw of him doing a dark match for WWF he was still at his Kokina weight. But after coming to WWF he just got bigger and bigger. I can't see him dying so young if he had kept his weight down early on.

Some of the stuff confused me though. Like Rikishi saying that the Headshrinkers were supposed to be Samu and Yoko, when Samu and Rikishi were the Samoan Swat Team in the NWA, WCCW and other places. So why all of a sudden would Fat (Rikishi) be taken out and replaced by Yoko in that team??
But was there any Prime Time Wrestling footage in 1992 of Yoko as Kokina Maximus wrestling, or was everything for dark matches only with just being video taped anyhow??

I can't see him dying so young if he had kept his weight down early on. I think if he lost enough weight they would have brought him back with Rikishi as a tag team in late 99. Here’s an interesting fact, Yokozuna helped get Rico to wwe.

It was all dark stuff. The only hint of that character we got on TV was prior to SSlam on PT when Gorilla mentioned there is a 3rd Samoan coming to the WWF.They never mentioned it again and just debuted em as Yoko in October.

THe yoko doc was so very well done. Like it was said, not many things that we didn't know. But the candid footage was really cool to see. And it was also cool to see me in some of the footage they showed at WrestleMania 9! I've never been able to see myself in the audience before for that show. LOL

Can't wait for the RVD one. Hope it leads to an early WWE-career figure of him from Mattel.

gotta say they killed it with the Yoko episode. what a great presentation. could use a little less Bruce Pritchard but hey, that's my only gripe.
Bret getting to take the piss outta Hogan's ego was great
