The question is the post, but I'll add context. I've loved freestyle and greco-roman wrestling since I was seven, fell in love with professional wrestling in hopes of getting to wrestle when I realized I'd never be able to attend a college with a wrestling team. I freaking love singlets. They are the one outfit that is distinct to us wrestlers. Trunks are always mistaken for underwear, tights are literally just form fitting pants, and a shirt is just a shirt. But every other tom, dick and harry I have met in my wrestling days, from martial artists in Taekwondo and BJJ, to even the boys in my short tenure on the independents, to the carny style matches I would have for money with friends and bar patrons on a collection of rugs behind a bar, every other guy hates singlets. AND IT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME. Why? What about it bothers you? If you're in a grappling sport, concern for homoeroticism is a nonstarter. If you're worried about feeling gay in a fight, your not fighting, you're sparring poorly. When I would spar or roll with people, I was in there to make them feel threatened. I wanted to be better and refused to lose to halfwits who couldn't tell a toehold from a hole in their shoe. You are most likely wearing some form of form fitting attire. The distaste of the aesthetic of them makes no sense to me either, because the majority of the greatest practitioners are mangling the human body into their desired position wore singlets while doing so. Frank Gotch, Danny Hodge, Dan Gable, Dan Severn(Beware the killer dans) Jack Brisco, Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, Chris Taylor, Alexander Karelin, dozens of men who are the personification of masculinity wear singlets and give no s. I just thought about the association of less than athletic pro wrestlers using them to cover up, but that's essentially body shaming misdirected at the outfit. I know I'm ranting a bit, but I don't understand it. Singlets are awesome, they are unique to wrestling and we should celebrate them. It's also the one wrestling attire that isn't a costume or outlaw/backyard goof outfit that you can get service in a store/burger joint in.

They're corny as hell. And most guys that wear them makes me know upfront that this isnt gonna be a "fun" match.

I used to wrestle in middle school, I didn't hate it but I just didn't feel right, would have much rather wore compression shorts or something. When I start getting into wrestling for local feds I'm most likely going with Bobby Fish/2000's AJ Styles style trunks that go down the legs a bit. I may just go with regular tights I don't know. Singlets just really aren't for me. I know one thing though, I'm not going to wrestle with laced boots.

It looks like a one piece bathing suit but it's better than fighting in board shorts with no shoes.

I mean, I camt really make that make sense. It's just something I see and immediately say, damn, that guy really chose to wear that? THAT? The glorified underwear look no better. Just my personal view of it, but I could NEVER.

I didn't know there was hate for singlets.
The general rule of thumb when I was on the indy scene is that the better your physique, the less you wear. Look great? Wear trunks. Have scrawny legs? Wear tights. Bit doughy in the middle? Time for a singlet. So there was definitely a little bit of an attitude of using a singlet to cover up. And while you'd see them on the big, mean, powerful lads, you would also see them on lazy guys who didn't take wrestling seriously enough to go to the gym or watch their diet. I can see the stigma there.
Better than wearing a t-shirt though.
I like them as visual shorthand for a certain style. They scream "amateur wrestler", and if that's what you're going for, awesome. It's a gimmick.
I got a surprising amount respect in locker rooms early just for having 'real' wrestling boots with laces, as opposed to cheap kickpads. Function over fashion there. Kickpads for kicks and more ankle flexibility for high flying. Boots for everything else.

Olympic weightlifters wear singlets too. And powerlifters as well. But when they first needed singlets way back in the day, they ordered wrestling singlets from the Sears Roebuck. So it is first a wrestling singlet, then a lifting singlet.

People just think things without any consideration of why.

I said the trunks are no better. So I dont just hate singlets. And there is consideration why. It looks dumb. It looks like things that if I articulated them to you, I'd get banned. There is a difference between not having a reason and having reasons you cant say because these forums are overly moderated at times. That's all.

For the same reason NBA players dont wear coochie cutter shorts and the NFL doesnt wear leather helmets without facemask....Times change.
Not to mention Greco roman wrestling & pro wrestling have very little in common. One is a sport, the other is a staged carny/entertainment act.

You won’t get banned for saying it looks sexually inappropriate. To be worried about looking inappropriate or homoerotic while in a fight, you’re going to lose. Really badly.
