One thing I recall that is great about the show is how over Triple H was in front of the markiest of marks fresh off his “reign of terror” I remember reading rumors at the time that Hunter felt Christian, Jericho, Angle, and Edge weren’t “good enough” heels to get Cena cheered and that he could get the job done. Boy was he wrong, and like you said, it was in one of the markiest cities around. The match itself has always been a bore-fest to me, but the crowd is always fun to go back and listen to.

That crow may be the second most anti Cena crowd Ever behind ECW ONS 06

A lot of people say Edge vs Foley was the best match, but my favorite match of the show is Trish vs Mickie.

I actually really liked Mania 22, I had taken about 3-4 years off of wrestling at that point and the Saturday Nights Main Event return on NBC combined with this mania brought me back as a full time fan.

I thought it was pretty good for what it was. Obviously if Batista wasn’t injured and Eddie’s death weren’t a thing the card prob looks a lot different.
Could have been
Triple H v. Cena Orton v. Batista HBK v. Eddie Taker v. Angle Edge v. Foley
Only things I look back on and aren’t a fan of was Mysterio’s push. Although Rey is a great talent, he clearly got that spot due to Eddie’s passing and for me it hasn’t held up well over time. He had one of the worst world title runs ever and Angle was over HUGE at the time. And obviously Booker T deserved better than the Boogeyman as a Wrestlemania opponent. Cena/Trips had much better bouts later in their feud, that whole thing just felt super overproduced from the goofy entrances to the fact that the main event was between one guy who had been shoved down our throats for years and the other who was just starting to do the same.
Angle/Taker would have been the best Mania main event they could have gone with. If it were my call, book Angle vs. Rumble winner Undertaker in the main event for the World Title, Cena finally gets his hands on Edge and his revenge for the WWE Title and have Rey/Orton finish their blood feud over Eddie at Mania.

With what they had to work with, I’m with you that Angle/Taker should have been the WHC match at WM that year. I mentioned in a previous post that with Orton’s pending suspension following WM combined with Rey’s terrible title run, they should have fought 1v1 on the undercard and not been anywhere near the world title. I’d have booked WM22 as... Angle vs Undertaker - WHC Cena vs Edge vs HHH - WWE Championship HBK vs JBL w/ Vince McMahon - Street Fight Benoit vs Mark Henry - US Title Rey vs Orton Trish vs Mickie - Women’s Championship MITB (RVD, Matt Hardy, Bobby Lashley, Booker T, Shelton Benjamin, Mick Foley) MNM vs London & Kendrick - WWE Tag Titles Big Show & Kane vs Carlito & Masters - World Tag Titles I know with Batista hurt and Cena on Raw that they wanted to have Cena going over HHH be his “star-making” moment, but Edge deserved to be in that match. Cena can still go over while Edge helps make the match more intriguing.

I think; it had cool aesthetic and vibe and feeling to it. Shawn and Vince had memorable performance. Cena and HHH was lackluster; showing. I think the WHC; could of been better with more time. I didn't like the Eddie story. If we just had Rey do this underdog story to WrestleMania; and do it in Eddie's memory. And just have Orton; sneak his way in like he did in our world. None of the Eddie is in hell or this deep Eddie centric stuff; it would of been fine showing. Edge/Foley was beautiful; but I do think Edge/Cena going into WM 22 could of been better showing then Edge/Cena. Money in The Bank was the weakest of the early Money In The Banks 2005-2010 Pre the PPV event. WM 21/23/24 all were impressive. 22 just was very flat; it was a flat show.
2006 somewhat had more of this Attitude Era feel. Crash TV somewhat returned. I liked 2006 in some regards I think 2006 was one of the weakest years of SmackDown. I think King Booker was literally the only good thing carrying through 2006 SmackDown. Raw had very entertaining main event scene. I personally found the DX/McMahons angle as fun time; and Edge/Cena with RVD in part of the mid summer. Rated RKO; I think Raw had great main event scene. But; everything outside of that little area; I think 2006 was pretty garbage.

Agreed with Edge holding the belt to WM. While his momentum did pick up again after dropping the belt at the Rumble, it was stopped-dead for a bit there considering the cheap way he won the belt and then lost it in his first major defense. Edge/Foley was the best match of the night, but I remember fans being somewhat luke-warm on the build as it seemed like a major step down for Edge at the time. Despite what McMahon thought, Cena/HHH just wasn’t a “big” match up at that time. A few years down the road, sure, but I remember just not caring for the build of the match. Even if you kept HHH in the match, I think they should have ran the triple-threat with Edge from Backlash at WM. Have Cena pin Edge to get the belt back, and the next month you can do Cena vs HHH and Edge vs Foley at Backlash.

Weirdly this was 10 year old's me favourite Wrestlemania for a while. Don't really have a reason, just think it was a time where my love for wrestling was huge.
The World Heavyweight Title Triple Threat bangs too

The World Heavyweight Title Triple Threat bangs too Agreed that the triple threat is a fun 10-minute match, but it’s criminally too short to build any real drama. While I still feel that Angle/Taker should have been for the WHC, this match was more entertaining than Cena/HHH to me and should have been given atleast another 5 minutes.

I think that’s a excellent idea If you’re worried about Edge/Cena main evening the inclusion of Triple H I think will benefit it greatly. And I think that would be nice way to get to the summer of 2006 in otl. I think Wm 22 could of been a lot more fun of a show. I think it’s Mania that had wasted potential.

No, I couldn't disagree more. I loved this event as a kid and still do to this day. Edge/ Foley was and is an awesome match. The HBK/ Vince and MITB matches were solid, and the Cena/ Triple H main event had a big fight feel to it. What more could you want?

The best thing about WM22 is the random poster of Cena delivering a bulldog to Booker T, which isn't even a match on the card If anything sums up this being a throw-away WM, it’s that poster. I don’t think any other WM has had such an out of place poster as that one. i know i went to it live and would like to have a poster of it because of that, but the poster sucks so bad i didnt even want one!
