Here in NY I was paying for public transit when I kept going around the different Toys R Us (when they were still in business here), just to find their exclusives. After a while it just made sense to buy the figure online and pay extra if the total added up to the figure + the amount I would have spend traveling to locate it.
Its not always outrageous prices. You pay how ever much you feel comfortable. You may not pay those scalper prices but someone who REALLY wants that figure, will.
The quest to add more to anyone's collection will continue anyway.

I mean, they are charging people more than double the retail price. Do u not understand math? Upfront sure it's more than double on paper. Free shipping means $7 - $8 out of sellers pocket. Now $44 is $37. EBay fees take another $6 between item and shipping. $37 is now $31. Figure cost is $19.99 before tax. Add tax figure cost is now $21.26. $31 - $21.26 = $9.74 profit. So you have that person's time and costs to package the item and then get it to the post office in that $9.74. So when u look at the math you are not being overcharged anywhere near what you think. Then that’s even more of a reason they should not buy the extras to sell.

Buying up all of something that is brand new and charging people above MSRP is what I find scummy. If you're charging a higher price for something that has been discontinued, or out of production for a while then that's different. Just my two cents. doesn’t even need to be something older in my opinion. if i stumble across something that i know is harder to find but i personally have no interest in, i’ll pick it up to MAYBE sell/use as trade bait someday. that’s what i did with the greg valentine legends figure. thing is, it’s just still sitting in my room because i have no real need to get rid of. realistically i pretty much bought it because i saw it and thought “oh cool, i found it. might as well grab it” however, buying ALL of the new stuff is indeed a scummy move

I'm very hard pressed right now to think of a hobby where some type of secondary market/scalping/artificial scarcity doesn't exist. I'm sure they must exist, but I can't think of them.

My Ricky Steamboat will be here the first week of March, and I didn't even have to overpay or make a thread that got forcefully cleaned up to wipe all the evidence of me saying violent things. March 19 for Amazon to deliver mine. Steamboat is the only figure I ordered from them in the last month that hasn’t gotten pushed up a couple weeks yet.

Heh, no kiddin'. I'm new to it, but I recently built a PC, and I could not believe how cutthroat the market for CPUs and GPUs was. Literally the only reason I've even got my system running is because of scalpers. A buddy of mine was feeling stir crazy and decided to buy a 5900x from a scalper, so I got to buy his 4 month old 3700x for a deep discount since I was already doing a budget build. That came a couple weeks ago, and I'm up and running, but I'd had a 3300x on backorder since November, and I'm sure I'd still be waiting if he didn't go to the secondary for his own rig.

I was able to get in orders for this line when the links first hit Amazon.
The only thing I have caved in on and paid scalper prices for were the Billie Kay and Peyton Royce elites when they first hit Australia.

Figure collecting for me has historically been frustrating for much of my life. Back when i collected Starting Lineups, scalpers would always buy all the good players up and stores were left with figures no one wanted. Other hobbies i have include building custom arcade machines, and playing music. Luckily scalpers haven’t managed to somehow ruin those hobbies, or make it impossible to reasonably obtain anything

Exactly - and that’s what’s happening here.. really obvious these ppl are buying up new figures to make $10 profit, which is super lame so not sure why so many ppl have a problem with the OP.

Your forgetting paypals fee/cut so take out even more. So yeah unless selling those aew 1/500 or elite harley race figures they are not making much.

The theory behind scalping is simple enough. It just suggests at the quantities produced they were underpriced. If they weren't, it wouldn't work. (And sometimes it doesn't and they get caught and have to sell at a loss)

Including the ones where this guy commenting above me actually went through my comment history where i mentioned being a parent and he said i should “be a better parent” because apparently once you have kids you can no longer say anything in jest because i should be busy 24/7 being a parent. 😂

"Apparently once you have kids have a job you can no longer say anything in jest sell figures on eBay because I should be busy 24/7 being a parent working my job. 😂" And yeah...parenting is kind of a 24/7 gig, even with a job or a side hustle.

But since we're on the subject, my kid is my favorite customer to flip my old figures to. He basically gets anyone I upgrade, so he's got a weird mish-mash of Matt Hardy, John Cena, and Edge running around. He'll be picking up an old Sasha Banks as soon as my new E83 one comes in...right around the time my Ricky Steamboat Elite should be coming in, too.

Is it weak to wipe out stock on a product to make only $9 or so profits? Sure but who is anyone to judge someone else for doing it? Collecting is always supply and demand. Always has been always will be across all platforms. When I was a kid I never found a Starting Lineup of Shaq, Iverson, or Kobe in a store. Found lots of ones I never cared about though. People act like resellers are new when they have always been there for any collectible medium. It's just gotten easier with the internet but its always existed. If someone wants to take that time, effort, and upfront cost to maybe make $9 then more power to em.
