Buddy Rogers would have turned 100 the other day! Ric Flair wrestled both Edge (still active in 2021) and Rogers (who started wrestling in 1939, the year Hitler invaded Poland).

Buddy Rogers is a fascinating character. from his prodigious days, to Bruno forcing him to submit in the equivalent of a brock lesnar level of domination, to potentially faking a heart issue and having numerous enemies.
I think it's fair to say him and Gorgeous George were the first to achieve major success without any serious background in wrestling or real legitimacy as a major tough guy.

Hulk-a-mania is still running wild in 2006, DUDE! This young kid, Randy, jack, couldn’t draw flies to a flee market. So let me ask you this, JACK, WHATCHA GONNA DO, WHEN HULK-A-MANIA RUNS WILD 1 MORE TIME, BROTHER!” *Vince’s body goes numb with excitement*

In the mid-2000's he was supposed to be built into the next face of the company. But he ended up being number 2 to the less talented John Cena. If Orton would have won at Unforgiven 2004, if Orton would have won at SummerSlam 2006, if Orton would have won at WrestleMania 25 he'd be the biggest star wrestling ever saw. You can't tell me that I'm wrong.

HBK at Summerslam 05 That garbage finish with Sting at Starrcade 97 The Bash at the Beach 2000 fiasco (which is still hillarious to me because they interviewed Hogan as part of the Monday Night War series on the network and he had the balls to say that was the first time he ever used his creative control card. Lol ok “brotha”) It’s the reason why Austin refused the big money match with him Let’s not give Orton too much credit as to the reason of who went over the night of Summerslam 06 Brotha!

Austin has at least said in retrospect that denying the Hogan match was a mistake and he needed to put his ego aside and the WCW past aside to make money.

In 2002 both of them was in bad shape. Austin was going through a divorce and was a trainwreck, not to mention his neck and knee injuries. Hogan was past his prime and I don't think it would have been a good match at all. I think in 2002 The Rock was in a better state to carry a match with Hogan than Austin, even though Austin is a better worker overall.
