Despite the terrible ending, WM17 still stands as the clear best WM ever. Great wrestling. Great stories (until the end). There was something of everything on this show for everyone (pure wrestling, brawling, drama).
I’m one of the fans that consider this show the true end to the Attitude Era.

People will be annoyed about the ending. But it was just so shocking. The swerve you could have never dreamed of. Vince owed it to Steve to let him try being a heel. It didn't work out in the end. But it made for great TV. One of the problems was coming out of X7 two of the top babys were gone so it was always gonna be tough from there with no one suited to step in to those spots.
But boy what a note to end on for the Attitude Era. The final 3 PPVs made for probably the greatest road to Wrestlemania ever with Royal Rumble & No Way Out being so great too.

This is wrestling as I remember from the attitude era. Probably one of the few times everyone was healthy but the quality and depth of the roster needs to be mentioned. You had HHH/Taker 2nd headlining Austin/Rock? Angle/Benoit, TLC, Guerroro/Test, Kane/Big Show, all in lower carded matches? Shane v. Vince? Incredible PPV top to bottom. This really brings back some great memories.

I don't feel it made for great tv. seeing stone cold's character neutered with comedy and silliness with Kurt Angle each week was nothing short of brutal |

The ending ruined this show for me. They should have called an audible and had Austin hit the stunner on Vince after the match. The crowd is silent after the heel turn. What a horrible way to end the best era of wrestling.

I liked Austin's heel turn. It was different and he did do some funny segments. It felt wrong on so many levels seeing the hero of the company switch sides but that's what made it so surreal.
I will say it gave us one of the most shocking ends in WM history.

I liked Austin turning at the end but would have had him end it with a final stunner instead of 20 chair shots. Hate that ending.

That whole story with Austin from when he came back was just brilliant. He hardly won any matches from when he came back other than the rumble and he had to use weapons to win. He lost to Triple H clean, the whole story of him having to sell his soul to the literal devil to get his Wwe title back was just amazing. But sadly at the end of the day people didn’t wanna see heel Austin. The actual storyline was just fantastic. Some of the best long term storytelling the Wwe had done since the mega powers exploding.

That whole story with Austin from when he came back was just brilliant. He hardly won any matches from when he came back other than the rumble and he had to use weapons to win. He lost to Triple H clean, the whole story of him having to sell his soul to the literal devil to get his Wwe title back was just amazing. But sadly at the end of the day people didn’t wanna see heel Austin. The actual storyline was just fantastic. Some of the best long term storytelling the Wwe had done since the mega powers exploding. Rock had replaced Steve as the golden goose. Austin returned & started just attacking people due to being previously run over, even faces. Sure it's Stone Cold but even that is heely. Tried to Kill Kishi & Hunter, okay that was a revenge thing but still quite heelish behaviour. Then his wife was meant to be aligning with Rock. He knew he was number 2 now. That is why he had to destroy Rock with chairs & then take him out indefinitely the next night. As a baby, Steve was underneath Rocky & he could not have that. So in order to stop Dwayne, he had to align with Vince & Hunter. Therefore making him heel in the process. The very people who tried to take him out previous. & what happened then? Austin ruled the roost once more. He was champion with a new atittude & had help to make him stay on top. He was number 1 once again. |

Thread inspired me to watch it, and again I love the heel turn. But Jesus, I get they wanted The Rock to look resilient, but it should have ended after the first assisted chair shot and a stunner. Having him kick out of multiple chair shots and a stunner only to lose to repeated chair shots was overkill. Outside that, the match is so god damn good. The rest of the show is good but wouldn’t make my top ten Manias I don’t think.

Honestly, I think if the heel turn had been the brutal, violent, paranoid Austin that it started out as, instead of the jealous, wanting Vince's attention, singing him songs and hugging him (don't get me wrong, I do love some of the comedy that came from it, mainly once Angle was involved, when they were both hurt), it might have turned out better. And for me, the thing that truly killed the heel run, after it had been on life support for a while, was the defection to the Alliance. |

I watched WCW as a kid but my family stopped watching because 'it got too bad" for me to watch (i was young)
I started watching wrestling right after wrestlemania 17, like a month or so after.
