I was really psyched about the Ultimates line when it first launched a few years ago. Although WCW/OWN Warrior would have not been my first pick, you could tell Mattel was putting tons of energy and resources into the line. It may have been the first time that they included multiple portraits/heads, and the paint on the jacket was out of this world. The Warrior face scans were pretty impressive too. But because I wasn't a big fan of Warrior's WCW run, I skipped it.
Sadly, I've found a reason to skip on all other Ultimates except for nWo Hogan - not because it's an exceptional figure, but because it's Mattel's first/only nWo Hogan and in light of its troubled past (the 2016 prototype of which I loved). I liked which era they picked for HBK, but the faces all looked off. With Bret, his confounding hair placement killed the figure for me, plus the underlying faces were off too. With HHH, I thought the execution was great but the era wasn't really one of my favs. Would have preferred WM15 (silver tights, red brand t-shirt), Summer Slam 98 (purple tights, yellow ladder, etc. - which we're now getting, somewhat), or 2002 blue denim comeback look.
And to correct myself above, I just remembered I did pick up the UE of Rock. It's a great figure, but Mattel knocked out Rock with Basic 100 so much, esp the face, that the UE didn't add a ton. I feel the same way about Austin UE - and a bit confused by the tshirt inclusion, which I don't recall him wearing without jeans/shorts. It's nice to have, but doesn't really fit the rest of the figure.
Anyways, I'm really hoping UE continues and that I find more reasons to collect. I think WM14 is something we're all expecting and potentially the Outsiders.
