I'm fairly sure I asked the same question for Randy Orton in the past. Well today I'm asking where do y'all think AJ Styles ranks on the list of "greatest wrestlers of all-time" list? Both as an in-ring wrestler and an overall performer, where does he rank? I would say as an in-ring wrestler he's up there with the best ever. He's this generation's Shawn Michaels, I would say that AJ has been the best wrestler in-ring since 2006-07 maybe with the exception of Bryan Danielson. As an overall performer while he's gotten SO MUCH BETTER at promos since joining WWE but he's never exactly had much character depth. What's y'all's two cents?

I honestly would have to think about it but as far as “wrestlers” I absolutely think he is top ten all time, maybe even in that five slot.

There was a time period where he left TNA, went back to the indies and NJPW and started having banger after banger. And continued to do so up until his over year title reign in WWE. During that time, I would say he was the best wrestler in the world. Then Daniel Bryan came back and took that title back. Overall I’d say he’s one of the best in ring workers of all time. Maybe top twenty.

AJ is possibly the most consistent wrestler I’ve ever seen. He’s certainly in the conversation for top 20 at least.

He's right up there. Would be higher if he had not of stayed in TNA for so long

I love AJ and I hate how he is stuck with this tag team thing.
For my personal greatest of all time I would have him in the top 20 maybe even top 15.

I can't really take people's opinions that seriously when the depth of their wrestling watching is not vast.
it's like trying to say what the greatest chocolate bar of all time is when you've only tried three yourself.
I've watched a lot of 60s,70s, and 80s wrestling and I still would not consider myself knowledgeable enough to start making claims on who's the best
if you're considering AJ the best, but you haven't seen the best of days prior, then how valid is your opinion?
it's like claiming Sydney Crosby is the best hockey player of all time since you didn't grow up in the Gretzky era.

I totally get what you are saying.
Fans who watched Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr play hockey are gonna say they were the best. Fans who watched Gretzky and Lemieux play are gonna say they were the best. Same now with Crosby and Ovechkin.
As for wrestling, fans in the 70s would say Bruno was the best, or Bob Backlund in the early 80s, or Harley Race, or Flair, or Brisco, but that was a different era. Same can be said for the 90s with HBK, Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Malenko, Benoit, Guerrero and such. And onto today with Styles, Rollins, Bryan, Cesaro, etc.
I think when it comes down to someone saying, "where does someone rank at all time" it more so comes down to how much you enjoy said person compared to how good they were. I would rank AJ Styles over Daniel Bryan. But a Daniel Bryan fan would rank Bryan over AJ.

The second problem with trying to evaluate things in terms of "all time" is that obviously as time goes on in any sport, performances improve. Like in terms of being the most ahead of his time best in the world sprinter, it's Ben Johnson and it's not close. But now there have been plenty of guys that have ran faster than him. Now, if you ask Ben, it's just because the surface and shoes are better, but that's just Ben being Ben. I like referencing my main sport for this, because it's very objective. You can't argue the results. The fastest time wins, the furthest jump wins, it's completely objective. You can see that the best of all time is whoever has the world record at that moment. Please no one @ me about Ben steriods lol, Carl was just as dirty, as has been basically every world record holder since Ben. It's a dirty event, sorry. When evaluating that in something like wrestling, it's basically impossible. Too many factors to consider, and you get the problems of both recency bias and whatever the phrase is for preferring the good ol' days with rose coloured glasses. I think there's actually a term for it but I've forgotten it.

These are all being based on personal opinions which is all subjective. And honestly if there was some sort of scientific formula where personal opinion was removed and only whatever facts that determine the best along with every professional wrestler whoever wrestled were put into a computer AJ wouldn’t even crack the TOP 50. But until there’s such a program there’s no way to know because you can ask 50 people who will give you their opinion and have 50 different answers.

In a modern landscape from say impacts creation forward, AJ is one of the absolute best in North America. Top 5 would be pretty fair I'd think. I couldn't fathom where he'd fit all time worldwide. It's up there, but trying to actually create a top 10 of all time factoring in all of wrestling is pretty much impossible, though I don't think AJ could be on it. (And Orton would be laughably far away). Top 50 maybe? I dunno there's so much history and so many different metrics it's completely impossible.

To contribute to the topic, I have Styles placed in the top 20 in my pre-draft figure rankings, where I tried taking in past accomplishments, skill, and future potential. Very rarefied air, top organizational champion material. His size and promo ability were a couple hits.
