All I'm saying is, if these go into producution as shown, then good luck getting your money back when Mattel gets involved. They are 100% plagiarising Mattel's IP by using their sculpts. Hopefully its just placeholders until Chella get their own stuff, because I want articulated figures of DK and Sabu, and it opens the door for so many other wrestlers to get made too.

Does/can Mattel own a style of figure? I highly doubt it. They can when the sculpts are the same.

Mattel CAN own the molds/designs.
Hasbro owned the copyright on the old WWF figures -- Steve said Mattel had to work things out with Hasbro in order to do it.

Mattel changed the arms to double joints so maybe the old style is free game

Mattel changed the arms to double joints so maybe the old style is free game But what about the torsos? They didn't change those. There's a very real chance that these get shut down. They literally just stole a Bulldog figure. You can't steal someone's molds.

Trying to compare the body parts and figuring out EXACTLY what the rules and legalities really doesn't matter. What matters is Mattel has a team of expensive lawyers that they can easily pay and litigate and Chella being a Mom & Pop setup, most likely don't. Mattel could easily drain all of Chella's financials without getting to an actual decision in court.
With that said, I would love to buy Dynamite and Sabu. I'm just not optimistic about the direction they're going and as I mentioned previously, they're walking a very fine line.

What's the difference between someone ripping off the Retro moulds to these guys using the Elite moulds?!
Surely if Mattel are gonna put a stop to it they'd of done it on the retros no?

I would think if they were producing guys already contracted to mattel or wwe then yes thats grounds for a cease and desist. But its just like customizers using the parts to make people not under contract or no longer under contract except for a few that make updates to existing guys but dont mass produce them.

I'm not going to dig back for the quote, but I'm pretty sure I recall Steve saying that in reference to the packaging designs and style. Their packaging very closely resembled the Hasbro style and art elements, which Hasbro would still control the IP for. There may also be elements of the spring loaded features that Hasbro patented. That would be a little more nuanced than the general 6/7in scale that is pretty standard across similar action figure lines across wrestling and non-wrestling brands. As long as they aren't straight up remolding Hasbro pieces and are using unique tooling methods, I don't think there will be an issue. That said, it very much looked like that painted Dynamite was straight up a CE Bulldog with a handpainted head popped on and possibly some sculpey added on the wrist tape. Terrible marketing decision, and it could warrant a c&d. But the grayscaled renders look like unique sculpting to me. I like the concept. But I'm not sure that I can justify the price for a company with no track record and whose work to date isn't really blowing me away.

Yes -- that's what I meant. I am sure Mattel has a utility patent on the molds, and should Chella use some of those aspects and Mattel decides to litigate, they might be successful.
Whether or not Mattel will do that, I doubt it -- but who knows.

To add to this - unlike Hasbro, Mattel still holds the license to produce these figures (Elites). Mattel reaching out to Hasbro regarding Retros was more about due diligence, crossing your t's and dotting the i's. Did Hasbro really care Mattel was making a line inspired by something they created 20+ years ago and no longer hold a license to? Probably not. Does Mattel care about someone using very similar molds from a license they currently hold and by all accounts is one of the best selling products in all of boy's action figures? I would guess they care very much so.

I think Chella said on Twitter that the figures are 6" tall instead of 7" like WWE/AEW figures, which is disappointing if true. So maybe they couldn't have used Mattel parts?

Judging by your user name you might be interested in knowing that I asked if they’d make an elite style kronik version of Bryan Clarke and their response was “coming soon”.

I'm all aboard for any Adam Bomb, Wrath or Kronik Elite Style 6-7" figures! It doesn't seem like Bryan Clark is in any hurry to sign any Mattel WWE Legend contract, so Chella seems to be the way to go, hopefully they are produced.

as I said in the Megastars thread, Chella's PR needs a lot of work, they've got a whole bunch of varying lineups/styles coming now, and it's not clear whether we'll see all of their currently announced figures by Xmas 2022, or whether we'll still be waiting for Series 1/Series 2 of these styles to be completed well into 2023
I don't collect the Basic/Elite/AEW style figures, so their 6/7" lineup isn't something of material interest to me, I just hope they're not going to miss the boat by the time the other Uncensored figures are manufactured and released

I’ve seen people confused if Gail Kim is a retro, bone crunchin or the elite style line - or coming in multiple form

I hope we see something soon, I'm excited for the potential of this line but the execution so far from Chellas point has been a little poor.
