To keep the amount of title changes down, I wonder…could they have just kept Bret as champ from Final Four to Survivor Series?
Think about it…Shawn loses his smile, Bret wins at Final Four. Austin won the Rumble anyway, so give him a title shot in the I Quit match at ‘Mania, put it on last, same finish - double turn, Austin passes out. I totally get why they wanted to build Austin longer before giving him the title, and they still do in this scenario. Sid and ‘Taker just work one-on-one at WM, Bret keeps the strap through SummerSlam (retains against ‘Taker with Michaels as ref, completely same as what actually happened, you just don’t have to switch the belt), then Shawn gets the strap at SVS ‘97 and drops it to Austin at XIV.
Has this idea ever been brought up as a potential alternate route by anyone? Any occurrences standing in its way? What do you think?

That's interesting. It definitely could have worked. The Austin/Bret feud was the best thing that the WWF had going for them at the time, it should have main evented WM13. Though, at this time, Vince did like for the fans to go home happy, especially at WrestleMania, maybe they didn't want to turn Bret and have him walk out as champion at the end of the night.

It would be a tough call to make with that. Because if so, we don't get Undertaker having a lengthy title reign like we had from Wrestlemania - SummerSlam.
Bret was injured too all through late April - mid June so that wouldn't work anyhow if he was champion. They'd strip him of the title for sure.
