Very sad, Del was one of the most under rated of all time.
RIP Patriot, you'll be missed.

I was always a fan of The Patriot. I use to watch him in Global when it came on ESPN at 4pm in the afternoon after school. Really enjoyed his run in WWF in 97 and thought he would be a great choice to take the title off Bret.
That being said, when I saw RIP Patriot/Del Wilkes on Twitter I honestly thought Conrad Thompson owned him again.

Damn, I was a fan of him back in 97 and was super excited when his action figure was released.

Like some have said on here already, I too was a fan of his in his Global Wrestling Federation days.
I remember he came in there and he was pretty much like the Hulk Hogan of that place. Won the TV Title right off the bat and then automatically won the North American Title. He was so over in Texas. Then... he was gone from there. And Eddie Gilbert took his place as being the top good guy.
Fast forward a few years and he's in WCW as a Tag Champion twice with Marcus Bagwell. And then.... he was gone from there.
Fast forward a few years he's in the WWF going after Bret Hart for the WWF Title. And then.... he was gone from there.
What a strange wrestling career Del Wilkes had. From the AWA to the WWF, he seemed to be pushed in every company he was in and during the height of said push, he left.
R.I.P. Del, you will be missed!

Even though he only had a 10 year career, Wilkes never wrestled as a heel unless you count the times he was booed in Canada during his USA vs Canada feud with the hart foundation.

Despite the death of Del Wilkes this company is still promoting The Patriot appearing on their show next Saturday. It has been known for a long time that Tom Brandi stole the character but you would think he would stop using it now that Wilkes has passed.

Such a pity. I was a mark for The Patriot going all the way back to the GWF. Always wondered why he didn't show in WWF before 97... would have been great in the New Generation.
Heard it explained why he didn't by JR & Prichard & it makes sense. They did want him but the easier schedule & better money of WCW/Japan earnings was his thing.

Lex Luger was also doing the same gimmick from 1993-1995. Summer 1996 wouldve been a better time for him to come into the WWF and he couldve gotten a nice push beating all those gimmick jobbers like TL Hopper, The Executioner, Who, Salvatore Sincere, etc.

it's so cool to see so many of you tuning in to ESPN in the early 90s to see GWF in the sportatorium! I was living in the Caribbean and I'd rush home every day after school to see GWF on ESPN via satellite TV! The Patriot was IT - the look, the gimmick, won all their singles titles in one fell swoop. I remember him feuding with the Dark Patriot (Doug Gilbert?). As big of a NWA/WCW fan as I was, I paid little attention to his championship runs with Bagwell, but he was always a favourite of mine.
It's a pity his gimmick got stolen, but I'm glad that I got to see the man when he first started out in his career. Should be in the HOF.

Who knows maybe they fancied him in a team with Luger to set up a Luger turn?

I refereed a match of his at an indy show a few years ago. He was so polite and a really nice guy. He wore his mask into the locker room and then back out after the show. A true professional.
