Seeing this thread from the main board I immediately thought of Hogan vs Sheik, Hogan/T vs Piper/Orndorff & Hogan vs Andre....While I enjoy it I dont think Hogan vs Warrior had any sort of historical impact. Id argue that Hogan vs Savage was bigger because it ended what was by far the best storyline the WWE wrote in the 80s.
That being said, Hulk Hogan will always be the biggest star in pro wrestling and its really not debatable. I know "Anti-Hogan" people and/or non Golden Age fans will always argue Austin and understandably but they always fail to realize that while Hogan was the top star in WWF in the 80s when Austin came in Hogan didnt just "disappear", he became the biggest star in WCW and was still pushing top numbers in ratings & merchandise.

This person gets it. Nobody has or ever will touch Hulk Hogan when it comes to sports entertainment.

I mean yeah I think there's a pretty fair argument for Hogan Shiek being the most important match, but then the wacky talk starts. Hogan still a racist piece of crap, and the whole Hulkster character is one of the most unintentionally ironic characters in wrestling. ‘And none of that changes the fact that wrestling wouldn’t be what it is today without Hulkamania.

kinda surprised that for something thats been around over a century, everyone is picking things that happened just in the last 30 odd years.
How is it not Lou Thesz vs. Buddy Rogers?
that match leads to the first WWE champion and the split from the NWA

How is it not Lou Thesz vs. Buddy Rogers? that match leads to the first WWE champion and the split from the NWA Recency bias. Trying to provide a definitive answer to any of these questions is essentially impossible, since no one was around long enough to have observed the entire history. Can still be fun to speculate but pretending its remotely objective is kinda bonkers.

Just the way the post read to me, sorry Gil All good mate. I can simultaneously despise Hulk Hogan and everything he and his character stand for, whilst still recognizing his significance in wrestling history. (Yes, kid me even cheered for Sgt. Slaughter over Hogan haha)

For me its Hogan/Andre. That was the larger than life unbelievable moment that sparked an entire revolution for the industry. Love or hate the guy Hogan let the way for what wrestling is today.

I'm going to make the case that Owen Hart vs Steve Austin at SummerSlam 1997 was the most important match in history.
If Austin wasn't nearly paralyzed, his career wouldn't have been shortened by neck problems and he probably would've drawn even more than he did despite all the time he missed due to various surgeries and time off. Austin's run on top was on borrowed time after the broken neck, while Hogan's run on top was on borrowed time because crowds were starting to get sick of Hulkamania. Not even taking into account how many more tickets and how much more merchandise Austin sold than Hogan, if Austin hadn't broken his neck, he'd probably have gone on to wrestle on a full-time basis until possibly the early 2010s, and imagine how much different the business would be if that happened.

Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997. Just saying, documentaries and books are NOT written about Hogan vs. Iron Sheik at MSG. Interesting take. That match created the Mr McMahon character, the greatest villain in wrestling history. Without that Survivor Series match, Austin maybe doesn’t have a nemesis and an iconic feud that pushes him past Hogan.

Yeah, Hogan/Sheik, Hogan/Andre, Foley/Undertaker (KotR ‘98), and Austin/Jake at KotR ‘96 all very much stand out to me. Rock/Austin at X7 should probably also be on the list. Hard to leave out Race/Flair at Starrcade ‘83, as well. Plus so many more from the territory era…

WM 20: HBK v. HHH. v. Other Guy.
If Other Guy doesn't win and becomes a world champion, I highly doubt that the WWE goes all out with concussion protocols and changes its stance on safety. Because Other Guy wins the main belt on the main event of one of their flagship PPVs, WWE can't really avoid the negative publicity. They don't get to avoid having a Tribute Night that goes terrible as details emerge. If Other Guy was just a mid carder, at best he gets a ten bell salute to open the show, and then that's it. Instead, because of him being high profile main event talent, he gets a tribute show. WWE looks foolish at a minimum for praising him, so they go on the PR offensive and start revamping their policies.

Without that Survivor Series match, Austin maybe doesn’t have a nemesis and an iconic feud that pushes him past Hogan. Exactly. The importance and implications of SS97 are wide and far reaching, and changed the whole complexion of the Monday Night Wars over to WWE's side.
