Thought this would be an interesting little poll to do. I predict ‘98 takes the prize just because that was such a hot time for the product, but I actually really liked heel Austin quite a bit. I’m going to go ahead and vote 2001, but every time these two Texans got together it was good, explosive stuff.

The road to Highway to Hell was awesome with a very “okay” match at the end. The stuff immediately after SummerSlam was convoluted for me.

The 1998 feud definitely. So much storytelling there with that one.
It started at Over The Edge 98 when Taker was the outside enforcer to make sure Vince counts three.
Then we get Taker/Austin winning the Tag Titles and having matches with Kane/Mankind, NAO, and the Nation on Raw episodes.
Then we have the Austin vs. Taker match at SummerSlam
Austin vs. Taker/Kane at Breakdown
Austin refereeing the match between Kane vs. Undertaker at Judgment Day
Austin vs. Undertaker at Rock Bottom in the Buried Alive match
Just a fun year of those two intertwined with each other in story lines, matches, and being a tag team.

They should never have locked up after Fully Loaded 99 atleast not on PPV. That feud wrapped up their story pretty well. To see them have to go back to that in 2002 was just not necessary.

And it had a crap ending, with Flair not seeing Austin put his foot on the rope and counted 3 for Taker to get the win.
That entire match was just based around the Flair vs. Austin story line and Taker vs. Hogan for the WWE Title story line. It was pretty much a throwaway match when both those men had amazing matches and feuds in 1998, 1999 and 2001.

Weren't most of their matches underwhelming? Just not good chemistry in ring?

Weren't most of their matches underwhelming? Just not good chemistry in ring? For me they were all very average. No all time greats, but they weren’t awful.

I’m going with 98 for the Summerslam build but yeah, these two didn’t have great chemistry.

gotta agree with how underwhelming the matches were.
2 absolute legends, but they were both ring leaders maybe they couldn't find a stride on who would lead the matches?
My favorite match of theirs was Judgement Day 2001 - but the 1998 feud was great, the matches kind of were lackluster
Considering for one of them, Owen died on the same night and the other at Summerslam Austin got knocked out..
The leg Drop from taker through the announce table is a top holy crapmoment from my end

1998. The feud itself was red hot, but sadly they never seemed to click in the ring together. Their match from 1997 is the best of the bunch IMO, but the story in 1998 was perfect.
It’s crazy how both are legends but were never able to put on a 5* classic. Works like that sometimes and just happened that they never meshed (perhaps if Austin never had the neck injury they would have been able to pull off a classic).

More of a character based feud; then in ring kind of feud still iconic showdowns
