One thing that always spoke volumes about Bobby is every account I heard of him when he was still doing appearances towards the end, was that even with all of the problems with his health, he was genuinely happy getting to interact with the fans. So really in those final years, without knowing it, fans that got to meet him, returned some of the joy to him, that he brought them. The only time I ever took a plane was to an autograph signing so I could meet him and George Steele. I knew it may be the last time I got to see Bobby in person, or George (I met Bobby before but not George). I wasn't sure what to expect but it was awe inspiring seeing him raise right out of his chair to greet and hug another legend and then put a lengthy inscription on a photo of the two together. Sadly Bobby was too tired to attend the late night tribute to him at the wrestling show. Despite the sad circumstances I'm sure it was good having his wife around at the signings since he probably didn't see her much when he was on the road. He was a national treasure and I'm glad he wanted to keep on the autograph seen for so long. I think he did a signing as late as March 2017, though he may have done others. |
