There’s something very weird going on at all three Walmart stores in my area….since about this time last week none of them have been accepting cash for purchases, it’s cards only …..I asked an employee the reason why & was told that there’s another coin shortage….Now if there is a legitimate coin shortage why are these Walmart stores the only places in town that won’t accept cash?? ….I call BS….Fact is the last time I looked all the green back still says “this note is legal tender for all debts public & private” which should mean it’s THE LAW that these places take it …..Who knows exactly what they’re trying to prove here by refusing people’s money …. Has anyone else noticed this strange occurrence going on at your stores? …..Please weigh in if you have any thoughts

it is legal tender but i believe the store has the right to refuse because youre on private property, kind of like how they can make you wear a mask.
Its probably due to covid somehow, who knows.

There have been a few places around here (New Jersey) that say they prefer cards or exact change

I was at one earlier and they didn't mind. A few stores do still have "exact change please" or "we will buy change" signs hanging up at the cashiers. Tried to visit a new 5 Below in town a month back but they were accepting cards only.
Witnessed a situation a while back, mentioned it during a threadhead. A woman who would otherwise be called a Karen, that I'll just call a raging b*tch, was insistent on getting change from a Dollar General "for her children's lunches tomorrow". The cashier kept saying no cash back because they were out. Went back and forth about a transaction for a pack of gum. She wasn't having it. Demanded the manager, started videoing herself, called the cops, whole nine yards. I ducked outta there and passed a squad car headed in that direction as I was heading home. Thought about the act of charity, but ya know, raging b*tch.

There's no federal mandate requiring that stores accept cash."Legal tender" is only an identifier of currency as a valid form of payment for goods, debts, etc. Think of it as a differentiating mark from, say, Monopoly money. The shortage isn't so much a "shortage" - there's plenty of supply in existence. It's more a matter of circulation. People aren't spending them, which means vendors aren't getting them.

Yeah our local crown corporation for Internet/phone hasn't accepted cash for years. I have my bills set on auto pay anyways but still, thought it was a bit weird.

Coin shortage is partially to blame.

I have a 5-gallon water jug nearly full of pennies. How much is a penny going for these days?

Coin shortage is partially to blame. I exchanged $50 in quarters for bills at a burger King 2 weeks ago. I should exchange another $50 in quarters I have.

I'm willing to donate $40 in change to the cause but only if people make a big deal about it when I do.
