I have a question about wrestlers that wear makeup or a mask and WWE owns the gimmick. For example Doink & The Patriot.
Does WWE have to get a legends deal from the wrestlers that perform under those gimmicks to make a figure or can they just make the figure. For Doink couldn’t they have just used a generic looking face with makeup to avoid any issues with the multiple ppl who were doink over the years?.

I believe AFA said that they have to have the wrestler under contract for them to do the figure. For instance, he has said that they would need Chavo Guerrero Sr. under contract to do the Gobbledy Gooker, even though other wrestlers have worn that costume after he wore it.

That’s very strange about Gobbledy gooker. Why would they need to get Chavo sr. under a deal when his likeness isn’t even used. Tons of people have played doink so what makes Matt Borne have to be under a deal but not the other doinks? I have so many questions lol

Plus, I think they needed him signed to get the face sculpt and attire, since those were specifically worn as Matt Borne. They may have had the other wrestlers under contract at the time they made the other Doink figures. Not sure. Yeah, for guys in make up and masks, its performer rights instead of likeness rights.

Maryse wore the Gooker suit. They should have just made it when they had the chance. Overthought that one imo. I would have loved her in the suit with the removable mask. Would have been the only way I bought a Gooker.

I want kimchee but I don't know if it was always Steve Lombardi or not.
Max Moon started as Konnan and ended up with a different guy.
I still think it's weird matt bornes rights were in place for the face doink figure in an attire borne never wore.
Gooker should be able to be made as he was never unmasked and Guerrero part of the character. But what do I know?

I have so many questions lol My guess is because Mattel made the first Doink using Matt Borne's likeness/face, and they reused that face for the 2nd figure. He may be wearing facepaint but it's still sculpted to use Matt's likeness. Like Sting or Warrior. If they wanted to use Ray Apollo I'm sure they could. But it would mean sculpting all new faces and signing Ray to a contract.

Would have been the only way I bought a Gooker. The suit worn by Maryse, Xavier, and various others were different. Steve has said they probably could do that version but would only want to do the original. I believe Gulak wore the costume very similar to the original and that possibly coulda been made prior to him being released.

But otherwise everything you said is spot on.

I mean wouldn’t it be better to do a version of it versus no version of it at all? That’s why I don’t really get the logic with that one. Half the figures they put out aren’t accurate or are made up anyway.

Not if they do the version Maryse wore. Hector doesn’t own the gimmick. WWE does. not according to AFA Steve said they want to make the original version and in order to do that they need Hector. So they’re actively making a decision not to do the modern version. Which I don’t personally understand.

I’m guessing they don’t wanna do the Maryse/Xavier costume because they’re only going to be able to make Gooker once. It’s going to require new tooling for all the original parts that they’ll never be able to reuse. So if they’re going to invest that much money on a one-off figure then they’re gonna wanna do the original most iconic version instead of something that looks like a cheap knockoff.

They probably wanted to make Gobbledy Gooker but it would require too much new tooling to do it
