I recently opened my L11 Big John Studd, and was going to do away with the old version from the Heenan Family 4-Pack, as they are basically the same figure other than the face printing.
After reviewing side by side, I think i prefer the non True FX version from the Heenan Family 4-Pack ... the printing is so much cleaner and sharper.
I'm not sure if I got an off L11 version (the eyes and beard seem poorly printed), but does anyone else feel the same way about this figure or True FX vs non True FX in general?

Same for me, idk what it is but a lot of ppl they can’t seem to get right. So I definitely miss the old way of printing

Most of the time it's great. But not every figure is perfect.

When True FX is applied properly, it looks way better than non-True FX. The problem is that it's so often misaligned with the sculpt that I've found myself having to buy multiples of the same figure in order to get a good one.

So many of them look great but so many look totally dead inside or glassy eyed like the newest sheamus/scott hall/andrade/aliester black. Also deco issues are way up since True FX in my experience.

I am tired of True FX faces not being aligned properly, due to that I'm going with non True FX. No more eyes on eye brows, I need to start saving money instead of buying multiples hoping to receive a good figure in the mail.

I don't think it's a huge improvement over the older style - sometimes it looks great, sometimes it looks pretty awful...
As I said in the Scott Hall thread: I do think quite a few True FX figures suffer from looking overly "made-up" (as in wearing a lot of make up and eyeliner) - it seems very heavy-handed at times.

When True FX is good, there's no topping it. But when it's bad...oh boy.
I have the HOF Studd in-hand, and the L11 on the way to me from the States, so I'll have to judge it when it arrives. I do think that the HOF Studd is one of the best headsculpts Mattel has ever put out.

A lot of the time it looks sparkly and glitter like, usually to hide a rubbish job and ends up looking blurry and vague. But when it’s spot on it’s great.

As stated above, when it's done right, it's great. But it's done right so rarely these days.
First of all, I hate the cloudy eyes. I have a couple Jeff Hardy figures that I can't figure out if they're supposed to have the zombie contacts in or not, the paint apps look so blurry. And, as stated, half the time you end up with horribly misprinted faces. My first Elite Fiend was awful and my Battle Pack Chyna is also horrible. (Both were bought offline so I couldn't inspect for quality control first). I saw a suited basic Triple H at the store yesterday that was so bad his eyebrow was above his nose. The misprintings are so glaring and awful that I do wonder if the switch was worth it.
Regarding the non-true FX stuff though, some of it was truly hideous as well. There's a thread on here that illustrates how, with the old Mattel CM Punk figures, the paint apps are so poor that they make otherwise great sculpts look wretched. There was no subtlety to the old style and it led to not only cartoony figures, but just bad figures in general.
In all honesty, I think it's on a case by case basis. Sometimes one is better, sometimes the other. The truth is that no mass-produced figure is every going to look as good as a masterfully crafted custom. Not that I have any idea how to do that but looking at the work on the fix up board, yeah. Most of the heads you see on there are worlds ahead of anything Mattel has put out ever. It's all about attention to detail.

I don’t particularly care one way or the other. But the True FX looks sort of pixelated up close.

It’s hit and miss.
I’ve seen some figures with fantastic True FX scans. The biggest issue is when someone has a good non-True FX scan, then they’ll get a wonky scan eventually when they use the True Fx. I wish Mattel would just do the smart thing and when the True FX result is HORRIBLE, they just don’t use it for that figure.

I’ve seen more face paint app issue since FX has been around. Paint app issue suck in general & feel like it’s more so now.

It seems to me when the TrueFX registration is even slightly off, it ruins the figure when that wasn't necessarily the case with the old style of painting heads. There was more room for error on the old style of painting. Also, I noticed TrueFX has issues with facial hair - it sometimes will miss entire chunks of areas in beards/goatees. In general, to me the quality has been getting worse since it was introduced.

Each have their pros and cons. I feel like there’s more good of each than there are bad

I’m 50/50. While I do believe that the faceprinting brings out likenesses more, sometimes it ends up looking like they’re zombies. The best apps for true fix are for facial hair imo. I still hate the way the eyes look, they look odd and prefer the non true fx in regards to that.

The black eyeliner around the eyes ruins a lot of figures imo. I also have an Edge where his beard is printed over his mouth on one of the UE heads. So that kind of stuff happens. But there were plenty of bad heads before True FX, too. When they're bad with the FX I find it usually completely ruins the figure, though. Lots of crossed eyes, smeared facial hair and blurry pixelation on the eyes.
I mean, as said, when it's on, it's usually amazing, but it doesn't happen every time, or even in most cases imo. Given the option, I'd probably be fine with the FX going away entirely. Especially since it seems to coincide with glue on hair pieces instead of molded hair. I don't know whose decision that was but I absolutely hate it.

I mostly love True Fx. But when it's bad, it's bad. Hulk Hogan's lazy right on his Survivor Series figure is hard to look over.
