Hey guys, has anyone here ever been a Freegan or tried Freeganism? Has anyone ever made/eaten a dish from reclaimed food? Would you, if you haven't? Have you ever dumpster dived?
I am fascinated by the culture, and while I don't have the courage to do many things they do, especially reclaimed food (unless I didn't know), I would like to implement a couple of their ideas like "share corners" and the ideas of using what others discard.
I have enjoyed many thing over the years that people would have just discarded, including entertainment items on last chance clearance and such, as I think a lot of us here have. As a kid, money wasn't something I had a lot of my own, so I learned to love things others no longer wanted. I learned a lot about obscure things and bands like that.
Cheers all. Hope this is an enjoyable topic for yall.

Interesting.. I couldn't do it. I get wanting to repurpose items that people throw out though. One man's trash is another man's treasure, I suppose.

This is an unfortunate reality for a lot of people but to choose this I think speaks to a certain kind of privilege.

I only eat food from the trash. I'm known locally as Morgan Freegan.

Disgusting, absolutely repulsive. Repugnant, downright revolting. I suppose if I truly had to I could bring myself to dine on others leftovers, but it certainly wouldn’t be a first choice.

I should clarify, the reclaimed food I am referring to is mostly the "day olds" that supermarkets toss out, specifically fruit, veggies, bread, or even "expired" meat and dairy. A lot of places give away to homeless shelters and food banks which is wonderful. Others place in the dumpsters, which people reclaim, clean, and eat.
Some folks go the route of whatever a buffet type place has left at the end of the night, etc. I know I bought all Churches Chicken had left at the end of the night for a flat rate...shmorgishborg.

This is something I take part in as I'm out of work at the moment. There is an app where people give away supermarket stuff and the foodbank gives away bread and veg that's welcome to anyone. It helps stretch meals out.

Are we really talking about eating from trash cans? Like is that really what we're talking about?

Imagine living in a society of so much excess this is a viable existence for some.

A former friend of mine used to eat wrapped food he would find in the 7-11 dumpster, mostly for shock value. That stopped once he got food poisoning. Stupid ass.

I heard of this a few months ago in a tv episode. (Call Your Mother) And hopefully not something I or anyone I know will ever have to do.

This doesn't have to be just food, it can be reclaimed items and such like toys , furniture, clothes, etc. Free curb furniture is fairly big around my city.
