Well, well, well....I took a little run out to TRU today looking mostly for new ML VI-which they didnt have-but they moved everything around. SO after a bit of wandering, I got faced with a choice. Do I get
a.)The Spider-Man and Sinister Six gift set
b.)The Fantastic Four giftset
c.)WWE RA10 Jericho and CS3 Snuka,Jake the Snake, and MDM.
Well, my love for ML bumped off the WWE, and the fact that there was more value and more new stuff in the SS pack, I left the FF on the shelf as well. Maybe next time, Richards family.
Anyway, the set was 45.00, which was kinda high for me not working right now, but thats why God invented credit cards. For 7 figures under 50.00, its about even as getting them of the peg, so good deal to me.
As for the set...its very cool. As any comic fan knows, this Sinister Six is insanely all over the map and innacurate. Black Cat was never IN the Sinister Six-she doesnt want Spider-Man dead at all-and I dont think Venom was too often. The set would have been better with Vulture and Sandman/Mysterio, but its still a good set and there isnt a lot of problems with them. But there are a few, and I'll get to them in time.
For review, I'll be doing them in order from weakest to best of the set:
7.)Doc Ock: One of the pillars of Spider-Man's rogues gallery gets shafted in this set. He's the most problem plagued of them all. He's too short, for starters. Ock was not THAT short in the comics. Its like they confused him with Mole Man and didnt fix it. It doesnt help his posability is nearly non-existant. The box proclaims 14 points of articulation. And when most ML figs average over 20...that's BS. And finally, his arms suck. They're bendy, but not very flexible, they sit loose in his back, and they wont get into good dynamic poses for ya. The face mold is pretty good, but otherwise, this fig is clearly the loser of the set.
6.)Kraven: Not a bad figure. But he's too plain. Its the same way I feel about the character. He's a hunter.....thats it. Maybe a bit of a mystic, too, but mostly just a hunter. Its like having a Ted Nugent figure. It might be cool, but why does it exist? At least he's been a large part of the SS, so he does BELONG in the set. I just cant get excited about him. He's tickled, though, as his new "SUUUUUUUUUUUURGE!" face mold can attest. It beats Ock purely for the face. I love it.
5.)Venom: Little secret...I hate Venom. Never have liked him as a character. He looks cool, but I just always thought of him as a pointless bad guy. A replacement Green Goblin. Maybe others will like his fig more, but thats why he scores low. He's made with a Sabertooth body, which works ok. It makes him larger-which he is. The face is nice. He's painted right. I like this version of Venom...the only one I have a reference to is the old Toy Biz one with the flicking tongue. I know they had a Venom or two early in the Spider-Man classic line, but that was a while ago. Good figure for what he is.
4.)Black Cat: I have the Diamond Select version...which is so much more awesome, but not as posable. That was the obvious ref for this figure-like the Elektra one before this. Her costume is done nicely, and the face is ok. She's posable, but I would really trade some of the female posability for them to stand or move normally. Those leg joints for the women are awful. And the joints for her legs to move have made ol' Felica Hardy have an ass bigger than J'Lo's after a Krispy Kreme binge. The figure is great, just plagued by the same problems as all the other female ML figs.
3.)Spider-Man: Being that the pegs are crowded by too many Spider-Man's, it almost hard to separate them all and find merits to them. However, in a set with other kinds of figs, it is a bit easier. I like this Spider-Man. Its evry classical. It has the underarm webbing that SM had early in his comic career. Its just a little netting that you CAN take off and it does get in the way for some poses, but it looks really cool. His paint is also a bit more classic than now-kinda weathered and motttled. His fingers are individually posable to flip off your Thomas Jane Punisher for ing up that movie. Mine was a bit stiff, but once I loosen the joints, he can get into a LOT of poses. Yes, its ANOTHER Spider-Man, but its a good one, at least.
2.)The first and second choices were very close. Both look EXTREMELY cool, and both are new guys to the ML line. But Green Goblin lost the win due to his lack of posability. Like Ock, he cant get into a lot of dynamic poses because he only has 23 points of articulation. No wrist joints. Or chest joint. Or double knee and elbow joints. Still-this is the first version I can recall of the classical Gobby (not the psudo-anime Humberto Ramos one). But its still a little off-its more closely based off of the Alex Ross sketches of GG for the original Spider-Man than the mask-wearing one from the comics. He comes with his Goblin Glider-which is fits on well, even though it doesnt have the foot pegs-some pumpkin bombs that dont fit into his hands well, and the bag he carries the rest in to slind over his shoulder (though it could also be Black Cat's tool bag for thievery). Another problem is my GG head fell off when I took him out. I got it back on, but its kinda loose and I know it'll fall off again. I dunno who's packing this in the boxes, but they need to be more gentle.
1.)Electro: He's got it all. He's new to the ML line. He's as posable as any modern ML figure. He looks cool. If they made him separate from the line...this set would not sell nearly as well. From the mast to the fins on the gloves...this IS the Electro from the comics. Just awesome...nothing more to say.
Each figure comes with their own specific base, which is neat. Ocks had some tentacles in it. Venom's face is on his, etc. Its be nice if Goblin had a stand to make his glider look like it hovered, but no such luck.
Overall, if you got the cash and you are an ML fan...worth the $$$ easily.
I'll get a pic uploaded later. Thanks for any time you took to read this.
