www.sescoops.com/2021/10/bret-hart-names-his-mt-rushmore-of-technical-wrestlers/Bret Hart was recently asked who his Mount Rushmore of technical wrestlers would be. While he didnβt pick a specific four, he did say that Mr. Perfect and Dynamite Kid would be on there, and would strongly consider AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan, and CM Punk. Since Bret has given his Mount Rushmore of technical wrestlers, who would you all put on yours? For me itβd have to be Mr. Perfect, Bret Hart, Chris Benoit, and Kurt Angle, with Daniel Bryan and Dean Malenko being right there if we had two more spots. I feel each of these performers have helped to define, and re-define, technical wrestling in professional wrestling. Hard to pick four but these performers stick out the most to me.

With the heavy caveat that I'm sure this list should have some historical Japanese names, I have not seen enough old Japanese wrestling to form that opinion. So it's a very North America centric mountain. That said:
Bret Hart, Mr. Perfect, Bryan Danielson, Lou Thesz.
Angle should probably be on that list, but I can't really cut any of the other 4 for him.
I think if I revisit this in like 10 years, there's a high chance Zack Sabre Jr. makes that list.

I just don't see Punk as a "technical wrestling" guy. I love him and he's one of my all-time favorites, but I don't see the correlation in his style.
I'd say you have to put Daniel Bryan on there before anyone else. I don't think there's another talent you can even compare him to in this aspect.
I get why Bret didn't say Benoit but its hard to argue against it. I am sure at one time that Bret praised Chris for his in-ring work. I'd rank Benoit over Angle on the basis of their runs in total. Benoit's career was almost 20 years and you'd be challenged to find any bad matches he ever had in Stampede/NJPW/WCW/ECW/WWF/WWE. Angle's run was great but just doesn't compare in a lot of ways.
I also don't think anyone has made technical wrestling look as "real" as William Regal did throughout his career. He always looked like he was in a legit fight with whoever he was wrestling.
I'd call my Mount Rushmore Benoit, Bryan, Regal and Bret.

Iβm a huge CM Punk fan and I wouldnβt put him on a Mount Rushmore of technical wrestlers.

Some strange omissions, such as Angle/Finlay/Malenko. Regal should definitely be on there. Also, Punk is not a high-flyer, or a powerhouse... So what is he, if he's not technical? Punk has always been a technical wrestler - especially pre-WWE. With the heavy caveat that I'm sure this list should have some historical Japanese names, I have not seen enough old Japanese wrestling to form that opinion. Controversial Maverick PUNK Good question. I don't know how I would categorize him. He definitely has traits of a technical wrestler but it's not where my mind goes when I think of technical wrestler. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Bret not mentioning Malenko makes sense as he was injured by Malenko in WCW from a vertical suplex and never really forgave that.

"Hulk Hogan, you're a good technical wrestler." - "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan in an interview on WCW Monday Nitro.
So there you go, Hulk Hogan would be in my top 4 spots thanks to Duggan!

Bret, Kurt Angle, Dean Malenko & William Regal.
Daniel Bryan and Chris Benoit are up there, Eddie Guerrero too but I'm not changing my 4. Those were the first 4 my mind went to.

I guess it depends on what we're defining as a technical wrestler. A wrestler with a primarily mat-based style? Would Strong Style count, or does the emphasis on strikes and power moves place it in a different style? Dynamite was awfully high-flying for his day - is he fully a technical wrestler or does he have a more hybrid style? Same with someone I would immediately think of for my list like Manami Toyota, or someone I would assume Bret would also think of, Edouard Carpentier. I mean, I assume we don't want to limit it to total purists like a Pat O'Connor or Bob Backlund, or straight-up World of Sports guys, but I'm trying to get a sense of how wide this circle is.
The idea that CM Punk is a great technical wrestler is hilarious. He's pretty sloppy. Always been a fan, but no.

What I find interesting is the fact that there are professional wrestlers trained in MMA who don't do any technical wrestling at all. Like, as far as I'm aware, worked professional technical wrestling takes the turn of the century Hackenschmidt/Gotch stuff, and mixes it with modern amateur wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, grappling, MMA, etc., and turns it into a cooperative performance. Always fun to watch. Well, Lashley and Goldberg are trained in MMA, which you'd think would make them technical wrestling experts in the world of pro wrestling, but they've never been booked to do that sort of thing, almost ever. Maybe a tiny bit with each. But, with their looks I guess bookers would rather go the power direction. As for my personal Mt. Rushmore of technical wrestlers, you've got tons of Japanese performers I need to familiarize myself with, and indy folks; but for folks I have knowledge of, Dean Malenko, Bret Hart, Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, Severn, Shamrock, Bryan Danielson, CM Punk, and Chris Benoit all top the list.
