Really playing with fire with CM burying MJF on the mic Not sure how MJF recovers from losing to a hulking Punk. How do you all think this plays out? A. Punk wins and moves on. MJF may look strong in defeat but it really does nothing for him. B. MJF cheats and wins. Feud continues to what I’d imagine would be three matches. C. MJF wins clean. Punk gives him the ultimate rub leading to MJF eventually taking the belt from Hangman.

They couldn't finish the match with that reverse Canadian Destroyer thing and face first hurricaranna into the mat? Statlander had to kick out of that only to be pinned by a roll up 20 seconds later? Good match with a completely unnecessary finish. Couldn't agree with you more, very annoying. WWE has been obsessed with roll ups for years but AEW are doing more and more of them recently and especially in women's matches.

Ignoring the technicalities of the fire spot, what was the actual literal purpose of having an incredibly rare and special moment given to a throwaway Cody feud? You'd think fire would be saved for a Moxley blowoff or something but instead Brandi just has some lighter fluid with her for reasons?

y'know I think I missed the memo somewhere that said AEW = home of pure technical wrestling.
They've been able to be a more entertaining company because they are willing to take risks on all kinds of matches, from death matches, to 30-min technical draws, to parking lot brawls, to terrible flaming table spots and barbed-wire fire matches that fizzle. There's a little something there for everyone to be entertained.
I really hope Cody is trolling everyone because he's doing an amazing job. Everyone's reading so much into everything he's doing, will he turn, wont he turn, it's fascinating to watch how much control he has with his character and the fans. I was so happy that one fan refused to throw back the weight belt when Andrade threw it in; the arena booed which almost proved Cody's working the crowd with all the cringe he can muster up.
Point is, the guy is having fun. He can deliver in big matches no doubt. AEW Dynamite drew it's lowest rating ever so it wasn't to prove anything. And so what if there's these little tropes like the golden shovel, these guys are having fun and we should find bits of entertainment throughout the show. I love the shovel part, it was hilarious.

Nobody said that AEW is the home of pure technical wrestling, nor did anyone say that deathmatch wrestling wasn't welcome. The issue has nothing to do with the spot itself, the issue is in it's absolute needlessness and lack of purpose other than making Cody look cool. Omega and Moxley built their feud in a way to make a deathmatch warranted. Edge and Mick Foley did the same thing. Tossing fire in an otherwise great street fight for no reason out of nowhere distracts from the match itself and devalues the spot in the future.

I don't know how this spot was designed to make Cody "look good" - if anything it was simply an over-booked spot. I don't know who wanted the spot in the first place, maybe it was Cody - but why his gimmick works: he probably just wanted the spot to entertain the fans, and for those who really don't like his character anymore, they are thinking he did it to feed his ego. Again, lowest Dynamite rating, not a PPV card, throw-away feud/no build with Andrade, and Cody didn't even look good doing it! He took all the table and and singed his back, the fire repellent he had looks more like peeling skin - it was all awfully executed - but so so entertaining!

Cody's back gel and the table spot overshadowed the entire match in a spot where it's only purpose was to show that Cody can take a dangerous move. Andrade is a complete afterthought. If Cody's goal was to entertain fans, the rest of the street fight would have done that while making both wrestlers look good, instead of just one. Like you said, it's a throw away feud, so why give one of the best potential spots of the year to it, if not for ego?

Like you said, it's a throw away feud, so why give one of the best potential spots of the year to it, if not for ego? The only thing I don't agree with is the ego part. This was literally a week ago but I just want to point out something: The last time they were in Atlanta GA Cody did that huge spot of moonsaulting off the cage and being caught by Wardlow. So it's not beyond the realm of possibility as they were putting together this match Cody/Andrade (most likely it was more Cody) wanting another show-stopping spot, so this becomes a "thing" whenever he's performing in his hometown. None of us really know how they put the match together; I agree that it was over booked and the table was unnecessary and honestly, Brandi looked very untrained with lighter fluid (but what courses do you take for that?). But overall the match was fun.
