Was there any reason given as to why Wrestlemania's 13 - 16 were in just normal arenas that a normal PPV would be in and not a stadium??
I get that in 1997 wrestling was that popular but it was rising.... but in 1998 - 2000 the WWF was at its peak for Attitude Era popularity.
Imagine Austin winning the WWF Title from HBK in front of 80,000 fans in a stadium??
Or Austin vs. Rock in 1999 in a giant stadium??
Was there any reason given as to why during the hottest peak in WWF wrestling that no stadium shows happened for Wrestlemania??

Both Philly and Boston's arenas were new during that time so I guess they figured it was better just to use them.Plus you gotta factor in the weather.
Veterans stadium here in Philly was a dump so it was for the best they had it in the First Union Center anyway lol

Mania 2000 in a big arena would have made the show alot better. Imagine a stadium full of fans singing pimpin' ain't easy & goin nuts for Godfather, Ice T & D'Lo. Oh well it was still an okay show for what it was

I can see why they didn't try to run a stadium for 13, they tried doing the Rumble in a stadium 2 months before and it was one of the most papered shows in WWE history.

Back then Mania didn't really stand out. The quality of wrestling was so great that most PPV's had a Mania feel to them. 100% agree, man. EVERY show felt big back then! |

Pretty sure WCW Souled Out 1997 beat out WM13 in PPV buys, if that tells us anything about how much of a rut the WWF was in at the time (though they still managed to pack a stadium for the 1997 Royal Rumble).
I think with the WWF hurting so much coming out of 1996, stadiums were likely the furthest thing from Vinceβs mind. By 1999, yeah they could have, but arenas were working so I donβt think they wanted to break the proven method just yet.

While it is surprising that WWF was using an arena in 2000, it was great when it came to crowd reactions.

I personally would rather see the stadium shows for only the biggest of the big events (III and VI and X-7 type of shows). But I get why any company would chose to do stadiums if that many fans are willing to pay see the show. I do however think, it's less of the wrestlers and matches now that make fans pile into stadiums but rather fans just wanting to be able to experience a wrestlemania during their lifetime.

I go back to this one a lot, but I love the smaller arenas for the crowd reactions. They just seem better! Case in point was Backlash 2000 when Rock beat Triple H. I still get blown away by the crowd for that one.
I think the stadiums do work for a Mania show, even a Royal Rumble but they donβt work for every show. Iβm glad they limit it obviously but they seem to be more and more getting done in stadiums these days (Saudi shows being the main one).

I feel stadiums are overdone. Sure, they look good visually - but I miss that grungy arena feel from the late 90s/early 00s.
