HHH vs Sting, Hogan vs Rock, Scott Hall vs Stone Cold I was watching wrestlemania 18 the other day and wondered why WWF didn't go with Hogan vs Austin. Was Rock more popular at the time? Austin didn't want to work with Hogan. He's given various different reasons as to why over the years, but the common one he sticks with is that Hogan "was a step or two behind in the ring" by that point.

After seeing how The Rock’s match with Hogan turned out, I wonder if he has any regret at all?

We all know what a bad state of mind Austin was in in 2002 after all.

I guess if you really think about it and consider where each person was at during the onset of the five year window, I would say Austin vs Rock at WrestleMania XV or Brock vs Angle at WrestleMania XIX.
WrestleMania XV was in 1999 and featured a clash of two of the biggest megastars in wrestling at the time. Meanwhile in 1994, Austin was a nobody in WCW jobbing to Jim Duggan in 30 seconds while The Rock wasn't even in the business at all yet.
Similar to my other example, neither Kurt nor Brock were even wrestling professionally in early 1998 yet by 2003 both were in the main event at WrestleMania XIX.

There's multiple speculation. JR has speculated it was the different pace the two work but he also said it was pride & ego of both men. Bruce Prichard says its health/trust issues with Austin and the state he was in at the time. Cornette speculates that there was no way Hogan was doing a ing job for Austin. Ultimately there's many opinions but Austin himself has been quoted saying the following... With Austin's words it makes me feel it was more of an ego/pride thing. Neither man wanted to job to the other and the communication just simply wasnt there between the parties to get the deal worked out.
