They want to differentiate the shows from basic dead events?

Because PPV is becoming a thing of the past like dvds and cds.

I guess because PPV is typically in bed with cable companies that you order through them. Now with streaming services they needed a term to differentiate from "PPV" so they went with PLE. It's the same thing obviously. You pay to watch it (even if in the form of a yearly subscription).
The better question is why they don't call house shows by that name anymore.

because PPV is going the way of the dinosaur.

Because WWE's monthly big live events are now on a premium subscription-based service and not on pay-per-view.
Hence "premium live event", pal.

Who actually pays to view each individual event anymore?
This one's been a long time coming imo.

I wondered about this through the whole PCera. The term PPV just felt dated. One my argue about the PLE term but every child needs a name I guess. Adding the word „Premium“ may be a smart move on the long way. Disney have already added a Premium membership to their Disney+ channel that allows you to watch premium content before the regular membership or even exclusively. I forsee that this will become a common behavior with subscriptions in the future.

Boxing PPVs, UFC PPVs, the one-off WWE PPV when you don't subscribe to Peacock, or any one-off thing when you don't subscribe to Fite TV or want to watch it on your laptop or flip it to your TV. I subscribe to Peacock but order AEW PPVs through my cable.

Ok, so you don't pay per view. Just like the majority of people that watch. I'd strongly disagree. I'd say the vast majority do buy these events as they are available and don't subscribe to Peacock. I'm talking all sports, not just WWE. It's smarter to do Peacock if you are a WWE fan.

"Illegally Streamed Events" seems like a better fit

I get it as PPV makes very little sense anymore, but in typical WWE fashion whenever they try and rebrand something or have a new buzz word they are just so freaking obnoxious and forceful with it that it becomes annoying. I watched a video on Instagram about The Rock vs Booker T from SummerSlam 2001 and of course it was "first time ever at a Premium Live Event"!
Again, I get that the PPV concept is no more, it just the way that the WWE goes about stuff like this which makes it more of a pain to deal with than it actually is or should be.
