Looks like he is indeed gone. I do not think this is a storyline at all. This would be way too on-the-nose for them to try to work fans in this manner.
Honestly, since the day Cody began getting hot on the indy scene in 2016, I said one thing: it's all to go back. Even when he started AEW, I had a feeling there was a part of this whole thing where Cody just wanted to prove he can be the top guy and wanted to take that strut over the WWE.
This world of wrestling is so, so unpredictable anymore. I honestly could see Cody coming to WWE in no-time. If not, I could see him just being done with wrestling for awhile. Maybe he would get into politics in Georgia, or try his hand at boxing and have a few santioned fights.

He might be back in 10-15 years but I doubt it right now.

Odd - I knew he was working like a date-by-date schedule for a bit, but I thought he had signed a new contract with AEW. Guess not. Pretty wild! Who would've thought one of the original AEW EVPs would come back to the WWE within two and a half years? And what happens with his reality show?
Well, now there's no way around it, now they've gotta do Rhodes/Austin at WM, lolol (couldn't help making that joke - a month ago the thought of either of those men working WrestleMania 38 would've been hilarious, and now it's conceivable both will be booked).

Not unless he's gotten rid of his tnt/TBS commitments. He has said about a million times he doesn't have that much left to do in wrestling, so if he did it's not for more than a few years.
Hope he's happy with whatever he chooses.

I would like to see him return to WWE for a bit, but I just don't see where he would fit in right now. He's been built up to the level where he can't just be relegated back into the mid-card somewhere, but Roman has been built up SOOOO strong, that him losing to Cody just doesn't seem believable now, especially when it's looking like Roman is gonna beat Brock to become a double-champ. And Cody definitely does not fit into NXT 2.0 anywhere.
I think maybe he's just taking some off and will return to AEW at some point.
But who knows, after Edge and CM Punk returned, I truly believe anything is possible in wrestling.

I mean if SRS is reporting it, I certainly wouldn't bet against it.

I mean if SRS is reporting it, I certainly wouldn't bet against it. While every dirt sheet needs to be taken with a grain of salt, when it comes to WWE news he's by far the most trustworthy. I'd give Meltzer an edge in aew news because he and Kenny are tight, but SRS still a close second.

What I'm not looking forward to if he goes to WWE:
The inevitable aew fans going "whatever Cody always sucked" and the WWE fans suddenly liking Cody again and pretending they always did. Not everyone of course, but we know the type. Hint: they're all on Twitter π.
We see it all the time with people on this board. Adam Cole and c.m punk related especially. No doubt Cody would generate the same type of idiocy.

I don't blame Cody for leaving if so. The vision and dream of how AEW was supposed to be is gone. All the indy talent they signed to build AEW Tony lets go because of signing all disgruntle WWE talent that feel they deserve to be in main events.... and they all are in the same spot they were on WWE just in AEW now.
Cody would be a huge hit back with WWE, and in a way it would be Vince and WWE sticking it to AEW and Tony. I could see Cody even working in NXT since his dad worked there.

They've only let go like 6-8 people ever, and literally every single champion right now is an aew person, not an ex WWE guy (yes, technically luchasaurus did a NXT stint a long time ago).

Cody is working you all this is all a storyline for Rhodes to the top. I'm going simple on this one. Rhodes family wanted more $$ than TK was willing to pay. That simple. I'd be happy to be wrong, I love Cody in aew, but I don't see TK destroying his shoot credibility for this.

When AEW formed, they took all the top indy talent or their friends to build the company. Then, guys like Andrade, and Black, and FTR - who couldn't sell out a WWE show if their lives depended on it - jumped ship to AEW cause they felt they deserve more, and the lesser homegrown AEW talent get let go by having their contracts expire. It's pretty obvious to see.

Every single person you just said did deserve more lol. Who was on top of aew that suddenly isn't because of some ex WWE guys? Who is getting let go that shouldn't be? Don't say Cody lol. It must be super obvious to be hidden by all those aew Champions with zero ties to WWE.

This is just strange. Between this and the Shane McMahon fiasco something doesn't feel quite right. I wouldn't be shocked if these two stories were in some way related. Cody leaving AEW doesn't seem as strange as Shane-O getting fired, but Cody in talks with WWE seems very odd. The timing of both of these things are very interesting. With the whole 'Forbidden Door' concept being mentioned seemingly every week now could AEW and WWE reached some kind of weird agreement? I am not saying that's the case, but I don't think it's as out of the realm of possibility as I would've said it was before the whole Shane McMahon thing. With extremely sluggish WrestleMania ticket sales thus far I could see WWE doing something drastic.
....Or maybe there was just a lot more to the whole Cody/Elite friction thing than we originally thought. One thing is for sure, Cody abandoning AEW for WWE will do absolutely nothing for his popularity.
