Both were certainly odd, but entertaining at the same time. It doesn’t seem like Heyman minded the first one, since he was on TV at the time (then again, Paul is known for disagreeing with most creative that isn’t from his own mind, so maybe he hated it). Seeing that the Vince championship win was mere months after he left the company in anger (or was released while angry, something along those lines), I imagine he definitely wasn’t a fan of that particular occurrence. At the same time, it generated mega heel heat and made money, so how can you dislike it? He’s a smart promoter, he knows what draws.
Anyway, which one do you feel was a cheaper shot at the ECW legacy?

Stephanie owning ECW just because in 2001, the legacy of ECW wasn't too tarnished yet, being it just closed down in January. So in July when we find out Stephanie is the owner of ECW in the invasion angle, it just stunk.
When Vince was ECW Champion in 2007, that ECW felt like the WWE style of ECW, so it didn't matter if Vince was champion. To me, the linage of that ECW Title starts in 2006 and has nothing to do with the 90s early 2000s version of Gordon and Heyman's ECW.

Stephanie
Did we really need Mcmahon vs Mcmahon vs Mcmahon vs Mcmahon again?

The ECW stuff was when Vince started to lose his mojo. He actually thought WWEECW was gonna be perceived well & considered December to Dismember a good PPV. Even after the poor fan reaction in the building. 06 Would be the second to last year WWEs ratings didn't drop. 2009 would be the last. A decline that has continued ever since.

Stephanie as owner was a an absolute head scratcher as you literally had Paul Heyman on TV at the time, why the hell was it needed? I still don't understand, it must've literally been a "Triple H is injured so she needs to do something" type deal because she added nothing to it in my opinion.

The McMahon overkill was real by 2001 and another reason why the Invasion angle failed. The whole family - including Linda - consumed so much damn TV time from 1999 through WrestleMania X7 that it really felt like burnout to once again have Shane and Stephanie featured so prominently. I will admit the early part of that storyline with Shane buying WCW started out hot, but once they introduced Stephanie as the leader of ECW it became obvious that it was nothing more than another McMahon family spotlight.
Vince later winning the ECW title when they revived the brand in 2006 wasn't much better.

Besides having one of their best rosters ever as well as being a stacked year for PPVs, the lack of McMahon family drama is another reason why 2002 felt like a totally new era - a breath of fresh air even - compared to the previous few years. You are right though in that it was like they noticed how little they were featured in 2002 and put the pedal to the metal in 2003 when it came to McMahon overkill. Vince and Stephanie were pretty much on TV every single week again and once Shane came back for his feud with Kane it was like an official announcement that we had returned to our regularly scheduled broadcast. 😮💨

Linda was on tv a lot in 03 too. Kane piledrives her and is put on house arrest but is allowed to be in arenas 😝

Steph as ECW owner. By 2007, ECW was long in the grave and Vince was basically dancing on there grave at that point. But in 2001, the wound was still fresh and seeing Steph as the owner of ECW, with Heyman right by her side, was ridiculous for fans.
