There’s been a lot of letdown PPVs that looked like sure-fire hits over the years, but has any PPV been a bigger miss than Halloween Havoc 1998? Looking at the card you had the following matches (many people would consider dream matches)…
Chris Jericho vs Raven Rick/Buff vs Giant/Scott Rick Steiner vs Scott Steiner Scott Hall vs Kevin Nash Bret Hart vs Sting Hogan vs Warrior Goldberg vs DDP
Yet outside of the main event, this show is considered a joke today due to the over the top “WCW” booking. I mean, how do you mess up Bret vs Sting?
The only redeeming things on this PPV is the main event and entrance stage, and to me was the real turning point of things going south fast in WCW.
Anyone else feel this is the biggest letdown PPV in wrestling history, or do any other pop into your mind over this one?

Starrcade ‘97 still has to take the cake. After all that build up you can’t have the culmination be that flat.

yea was REALLY bummed after this event. they were so busy doing too much stuff to put any effort into making the matches any good. was so looking forward to Bret Hart vs Sting & Hogan vs Warrior. and both sucked unfortunately. here's a cool tv guide ad for it tho: Attachment Deleted

83 Weeks with Bischoff is a great listen because when your hear about the background issues? It's amazing they got anything done from mid 98

It's amazing they got anything done from mid 98 Love listening to 83 weeks, and Eric isn’t shy about talking about everything going on behind the scenes. While Eric was no doubt living on a “high” for those 83 weeks on top, the wheels behind the scenes were already in motion as far back as 1997 for WCW’s eventual demise. Starcade 1997 should have been a wake-up call to make some major changes, but Halloween Havoc 1998 to me were all the issues being served on a silver platter. How do you have a card with that much potential and it’s remembered as a joke?

Is it true they considered doing Goldberg vs Warrior at Havoc 98?

Is it true they considered doing Goldberg vs Warrior at Havoc 98? I think Bischoff rubbished that in a Q&A on the Warrior episode 🤔

Not saying it would've been good, but man the hype alone could've been huge.

I wasn’t watching WCW at the time, so Wrestlemania 26 is probably mine. That card should have produced and all timer.

isnt that the ppv that they forgot to tell the ppv providers they needed to go over the scheduled time and so nobody got to see the whole main event?

The feed got cut right as Horace Hogan was coming down the aisle to interfere, so some fans didn't even get to see the end of the Hogan/Warrior match. At least WCW did put the Goldberg/DDP match on for free, the next night on Nitro.

Funny looking back at it that that might have actually been Goldberg's best match of his entire career.
But yeah the remainder of the card was rubbish. Was Sting working hurt at the time? Might have explained how Bret/Sting ended up how it did.
Warrior/Hogan was pretty much expected to be a dud from the start. Even going back to Mania 6, its two guys that are primarily hype but couldn't really expect a ton of delivering on the result.
I also remember that Rick basically chased Scott Steiner for almost an entire year and that was the payoff. Very lackluster.
Wasn't this also at the height of Scott Hall's real life drinking issues, and they had him playing a drunk on TV?

That Goldberg/DDP match was great, and if the WWE wanted Goldberg to work “longer” matches in 2003, this was the perfect blue print. Not too long to expose Goldberg, and with a guy who could basically call the match for him. Sting was apparently hurt as he went on hiatus following the event, but it doesn’t excuse the crappy overbooking of the match. I remember Rick getting some pretty big pops while chasing Scott in 1998, and after the letdown of a match at Fall Brawl 1998, you’d think WCW would have learned there lesson.

It really was a letdown. This was the most hyped I was for a WCW ppv! Not just for Warrior Vs Hogan 2, but the whole card was stacked. On paper I think you could make the argument it was the biggest "blockbuster" ppv WCW put on. So strange that nothing went right apart from the awesome set.

I remember at the time thinking, "Wow! This may be the greatest WCW PPV ever produced!" Just by what matches we were seeing on the card.
Though as a 17 year old teenager watching this, I did enjoy it then. I got to see the entire PPV too. For some reason, the satellite company we had didn't cut it off so I got to watch DDP vs. Goldberg. I didn't understand the following night on Nitro why they said it wasn't seen for fans, when I in fact watched it.

I've just finished watching this event for the first time and on the whole I wasn't impressed.
My least favourite match was probably Scott Hall vs Kevin Nash - I've seen better matches from both competitors, and the ending I can only describe as anti-climactic.
