Okay so for starters feel free to call me crazy or delusional after this bc maybe WrestleMania and the last 3 months of their programming was a one off and they will fall back into bad booking.. BUT I believe that in the next 2-3 years the WWE will have fully progressed into the next Era of wrestling.
Here's why. We have the reality era and for a long time its done it's job. Then the pandemic hit and we saw that era become completely literal as there were only fans on social media or via internet connection of some kind. Now that people are back I think this rise in numbers of people going out will only increase. I also think it will push into all entertainment events and directly into wrestling (and mma) in particular. The crowds lately have been insane. I can only hope this renewed love for the sport/entertainment will stay for awhile.
My second and most important reason for believing this is the roster and the potential roster we could see in the next 2-3 year time frame. Anything can happen of course, we all know this. That being said picture what there is to look forward to.
- love Roman or hate him (I was the latter certainly) he's become a worthy champion for the books and a legit boss fight to anyone who opposes his rule, rumors of his injury aside.
- Bron Breakker is sure to pose a threat to anyone above midcard level and below Romans level for at least his first year, maybe less.
- Gable Steveson is going to be pushed to the moon when he arrives. A mix between the next Lesnar and the next Angle? What a promising future. Imagine Roman holds the title for another year then a babyface Gable (assuming he can talk) fights his way up through the roster to dethrone the Tribal Chief at a WrestleMania. Joking but that'd be one hell of a rub.
- Rhodes, Rollins, Styles, Owens, Zayn, Belair, Theory, McIntyre, Orton, Edge, Kingston, Woods, Ricochet, the Mysterios, Ripley, Miz, Riddle, Priest, Lashley, Lesnar, Usos, Alpha Academy, Street Profits. Ffs Pat McAfee is an absolute natural. Who knew? I'm all in for anything he pursues in wrestling. If you'd have told me a year ago that Stone Cold would main event another WrestleMania 19 years later and that Pat McAfee would have one of the best WrestleMania matches of the night, I would have laughed at you. Hell even the Paul brother looked good in the ring.
We've reached a point where there's such a diverse mix of legends and veterans from multiple eras along with new faces and some of the best and beloved indy workers of all time. We finally have a solid foundation of men and women, both singles and tag teams, who can walk AND talk. At least 3 eras of wrestling are in that locker room and they can all learn from one another. I believe we have reached this generations version of Ruthless Aggression.
Lastly the potential. Whether you watch AEW or not, agree with it or not, they have made waves and ushered in more traffic and new fans for wrestling as a whole. That's a good thing for everyone who loves wrestling. May never be direct competition but I'm not here to talk about that. I'm here to talk about how there is another solid platform for wrestlers to stand on therefore making the writers work a little harder. Making the workers work a little harder. We might not see them as competition and the size of the companies may be incomparable but I promise you that as artists and performers, both AEW superstars and WWE superstars who care deeply about the craft are watching the others matches, promos and shows. That is the kind of competition that is good for everyone. Never say never. A couple years from now Darby Allin could be IC champ or MJF could be making his WWE debut. Rollins could be the ROH Heavyweight Champion and Moxley could be back in WWE. The landscape is always changing.
Do you think we're moving into a new era? If so what would you call it? What potential matches are you hoping to get out of it? How do you see the landscape changing in the next 2-3 years?
