My anxiety over collecting was thru the roof, I seemed to constantly worry about getting this or that & when ….then I realized & came up with 3 simple, general rules for myself that have calmed down my perspective of collecting dramatically….these can be applied to collecting pretty much anything ….they are….
1.) You can’t have it all but that doesn’t make what you do have any less significant
2.) Don’t collect according to popularity, collect according to what’s important to you personally….your collection represents you & your personal taste….it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks
3.) Rome wasn’t completed in a day & neither will your collection be….patients is a virtue
What do you guys think? I welcome any feedback ….do you think keeping these in mind could help you also?

No. You need to get your fight back and start getting all anxious and messed up.
Rules for collecting...
1. Stay hungry. Eye of the tiger stallion
2. Grab em all
3. To those of you who have a wife or a husband, remember this...it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission!
4. Rule 4 - we do not talk about collect club

1. Are you going to use it (pose, play) or is it going to go in a bin. That’s for me personally. For non-completionists it should be, will this bring me joy
2. If I don’t get it right now, will I have a chance to get it for retail or <5 over retail
3. Be reasonable, there’s better things to spend like 100 bucks on then plastic toys. I try to buy one at a time unless it’s something rare or I have enough to blow on a whole set

Buy what you enjoy. They'll never be worth any significant value in future so don't waste your time buying stuff you otherwise wouldn't, pretending they will be worth a lot in future.
Part of building a collection of anything, is the bit of stress and frustration that goes along with it. It's what makes getting stuff on your 'to get' list more enjoyable. I thought I'd never get Demolition and it wrecked my head. When I finally got them I was delighted.
If it's getting to a stage where you are actually getting "real" stress over it, then do keep in mind that they're shaped plastic and does it really matter if you miss a figure or set, that much?

I buy what I want/can find.
I collect based on my favorite wrestlers.
I only buy elites.

I only collect pre year 2000 (with the exception of later versions of classic characters like 2005 Hulk or 2002 Xpac and Scott Hall)
I don't buy basics
If there's something old and expensive that I need, patience and diligence pays off

I only buy things I like. I only buy things I can afford. I don't worry what other people think.

My 2022 collections rules/resolutions are to be patient, do not buy/overpay from resellers/scalpers and to lower my expectations when entering a retail store. As a pre 2000 collector most of my collecting this year has been fulfilled through Target pre orders, Ringside and Amazon and because of that I have really cut back on retail visits. So far so good.

1. Every line is dying
2. They only release repaints, except when they release someone new, but it doesn’t count because it’s not who I wanted
3. Hogan, Warrior and Macho are the only ones who sell.

These are good rules. I feel there are a lot of dirty words when it comes to buying action figures. "Complete" "Completionist" "Collection" "All". They always lead to a lot of unnecessary spending, and I was raised to believe that unnecessary spending on luxury items was the quickest route to ruin. My versions of your rules... 1) If you have it all, you lose. You've overspent. 2) Wrestlers aren't special because they've been on TV. Only buy your tippy-top favourites with personal meaning. If you can't name a match or promo you loved, don't buy. Even if they match a theme or stable. I'm looking at you, Bobby Fish. 3) Always be curating. Always be trimming the fat. Embrace eBay.

1. Get The Best
2. Collecting is like the flow of time, it's gonna keep going forever
3. Disregard opinions of BABA BOOEYS

1. Buy for yourself, not to impress others
2. 1 only per superstar, except a select few (probably 10 also lol, give or take)
3. You’d rather have 1 figure (or item) that costs $300, then 10 things that cost $30, so buy the high end stuff, not lots of junk…

I think an important think people miss is defining what your collection is and figuring out what your goals are. Part of that is also coming to Jesus and realizing you bought a bunch of crap you didn't want but thought was cool.
I had that moment last year with my NECA TMNT Movie collection. I bought them with no real goal in mind because I thought they were cool and now I have no desire to continue the collection other than "completion" so now I'm gonna sell them all. At the same time I started collecting Power Rangers and I had 2 goals, get all my MMPR Legacy Collection signed by all the MMPR rangers and get all the Red Lighting Collection Rangers and get them signed. I got my goal for the MMPR figures completed and it felt really good and now I can move on to another collection and goal (getting all the Marvel/Toybiz TNA figures MOC and signed).
So I guess my 3 rules are.
1. Make sure you know why you are buying and define your collection/establish goals
2. Buy because you want it and it works towards those goals
3. Don't start a collection before finishing at least one of your other ones.

Well since my first toy was Becky Lynch Elite 72, a rule I stick to is....
1. Keep it current. Don't collect backwards from Elite 72. Don't go down a rabbit hole of paying for overpriced backdated toys.
2. Can I afford it this week? Do I have enough?
3. Do I like the box art, the uniformity, how the toy pops inside the box?
4. A new rule but if I'm doing Legends 14 for example I won't start a new series until I complete that set. Otherwise you have an Andre the Giant Wrestlemania moments looking like an eyesore next to your Ultimate Warrior Legends 8.

GREAT TOPIC!!!
At 47 years old and a life long collector of WWF merchandise here are my 3 General Rules:
#1 Focus your collection: Identify what era of WWF/WWE that gave you the most enjoyment and go all in. For me , my pinnacle of WWF fandom was Wrestlemania 3 - I have a whole room in my house devoted to WWF 84-87!!!!
#2 Expand Your WWF/WWE Universe: If you find that current prices for figures are out of your reach, investigate the many other WWF/WWE alternative lines - Funkos, Retros, MOTU, WWE SuperStars. The WWE has really provided a wide range of products for their fanbase to choose from.
#3 Buy The Best That You Can Afford: Whether you buy Basics, Elites, Ultimates, Hasbros, LJN etc - Identify what interests you the most and buy the best quality product that you can. In the WWE collecting world, there is not a more pleasing feeling than viewing the perfectly conditioned figure on your shelf standing next to the many other WWF/WWE immortals.

I have a few that are forever changing
1- One figure per person unless it's a major change in look. I have exceptions for those from 80/90s childhood - Bret, Hogan and Warrior in particular as their looks and memories mean more than the last 25 years.
2 - New rule- wait! I've kicked myself a lot by buying as soon as something came out, and then 8 weeks later it's reduced down. Case in point- I picked up Earthquake & Yokozuna for £50 in January, I could get them both now for half of that. I guess it's FOMO but not over spending and waiting on the best deal for a figure is the way forward.

For me it’s pretty simple, the only rule I got is just buy the wrestlers I like. I’m never gonna be one of the collectors that wants a full roster of guys from a certain era or a complete collection of UE,Elites,a complete wave or even a tag team. I think stuff like that looks cool as 🤬 but it just isn’t for me. I rather buy my 20th HBK or Triple H any day then buy my first Tamina that means absolutely nothing to me.

I have a few exceptions too, Omega, RVD, Darby, HBK acceptable if it’s like E91, UE 7 and UE 13 Hogan. All different looks that fit in different sections of a collection
