Also? There was more mystery about the outcome of Batista vs UT for me...I knew HBK wasn't going to dethrone Cena. Cena vs HBK was a damn fine match mind you but it lacked the big fight feel of UT vs Batista...for me anyway Agreed. I know it’s always been reported that Orton was originally set to go over Taker at WM21, but I never bought it. Orton at the time was reeling from that terrible feud with HHH and never came off to me on Taker’s level. But Batista in 2007? Now that’s an interesting one. Like you said, either man could have genuinely won. Batista was being pushed as the 1-B to Cena’s 1-A and could have realistically broken the streak with his position on the card at the time. Batista hadn't lost many matches either.....He was booked incredibly strongly even after his return from injury in 06. I also never thought for a minute Orton was going to go over Taker in 05. Batista was a much bigger threat to the streak. Edge was the first time I feared for the streak properly though....

I’ve heard a lot of people feel Edge was the first real threat to the streak, but as soon as they announced the match going on last, I had no doubt Taker was going over. Batista was the first time I feared the streak being broken, and didn’t again until Taker had his back-to-back matches with HHH.

Hell of a match!
I do think it would’ve been more respectful to give the Undertaker, winner of the Rumble, the main event slot. Especially after Batista had only been back for a few months from injury.
I understand why Cena-Shawn was last but I think it was the wrong call. I thought it was bullsht at the time, too. Being a Taker mark has a lot to do with that. But they knew Cena was already a 50-50 spilt at best with the crowd and HHH got cheered over him the year before to an insane extent. Who’da thunk HBK wasn’t going to either?
Anyway, I think it was more so that WWE had realized Cena was the man and not Batista and the last match was beyond decided. Taker was so far established and didn’t technically “need” the last match to mean anything more to his win or legacy. Cena needed to beat HBK to continue to prove his status
Fun fact: typing this up I realized the main event at Mania had either Cena or Taker in it from 2006,2007,2008 then 2010,2011,2012,2013

The drama that match would have created would have been mental. 1) Cena was a legit threat to the streak....both onscreen and off given Takers respect for Cena. 2) the fans would know this....and the match would have been as dramatic as hell.

As a 35 year old man, I consider myself to be in the ‘boomer’ age in terms of wrestling. I know this may sound like a ‘get off my lawn take’ and I understand their rationale….However I think a show should have a hot opener…followed by worst least anticipated match to best match in order….

Taker Vs Batista was a good match but Cena and Michaels had a far bigger build up and was basically the main focus of Mania that year so it was an obvious main event.
Despite Taker winning the rumble I can barely remember the build up to the match with Batista.
