His higher royalty request got shot down hard by McMahon. An argument ensued between the men and his figure got canceled on the spot, where as Ax, alone, got the green light.

Mystery solved? Lol Any insight into why Powers of Pain was incomplete? I had just got this info from a coworker who was yapping for hours about the good old days of wrestling and showing off pictures he had taken with many of them, including Demolition. That led me to finding out the scoop at last. As for the Pain, according to my source, they were already heading for a breakup and then a repackage. Warlord got confirmed. Barbarian did not.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t correct and he was just supposed be I be in the next set.
The Powers of Pain were not headed for a breakup at that point either tbh.

I thought it might have had something to do with Smash being someone else at first. Maybe they had Ax and Smash figures ready to go when one of the Moondogs was Demolition Smash, but had to scrap that when Darsow came in.

Both Demolition was in the next set, which was made by Hasbro. Warlord was produced by Grand Toys and manufactured by LJN in 1989 so this makes perfect sense. My coworker had a friend who worked in the Federation and traveled with the crew often so his knowledge is expected to be solid.

Brother I’m trying to be nice, your buddy has a story that is better than the actual truth. The set was planned out, rumored that it even made it to the proto stage. The line was just canceled but the next set was penciled into be Smash, the Barbarian, Brother Love, Bad News Brown, and the Bushwhackers.

If I remember correctly, they were split up in the spring of 1990 because Vince had just hired the Road Warrior/LOD, and they looked too similar. Also, I thought I read somewhere that the Road Warriors requested they be split up before they arrived.

Correct, I don’t know specifically that LoD asked but def once they knew they were going to sign LOD they broke them up. They actually got a renewed push again after Survivor Series 89, headlining house show loops against Demolition and then Hogan and The Boss Man.

It was already planned for the Warlord to go solo which is why we see him in black trunks as we actually see him shortly after. The Barbarian was unclear at this point so there was a pause.

The mid 1989 WWF and PWI magazines had ads for Warlord as a single as the figure was already produced in prototype form. This would be around August 1989 which was months before the Powers break up.
Not even Barry Darsow himself would try and push this story about his toy being cancelled and wrestlers can tell some tall tales. The unreleased toys weren't released because the line was dying. I'm surprised this thread got this far.

POP were not split up at the request of The Road Warriors. They were intended to be their first feud & split after they were beaten.
Vince had a spasm one day, called "too many facepainted guys godammit" & that was that. He then split them before LOD arrived.

We can lock this; too many guesses, no real proof.
