I've watched pic feds and/or stop-motion feds that mix eras and I've seen them stay within certain generations.
I've seen collectors separate their figures by respective eras (Golden Era on one shelf, Attitude Era on another) or separate by respective feds (any WCW separated from WWF).
But I've also seen some mix it up, such as western mortician Undertaker versus Roman Reigns or Andre the Giant standing next to Big Show.
Which do you favor for yourself? Keeping it real or letting your imagination run wild?

I don’t pic fed, play, or display but if I did I’d keep it real

They're toys. I display them by putting them on the stands. Bigger guys in back, but that's it. Putting them in eras is going way down a rabbit hole.

I try to spit it into a few groups/eras I have them split like this - 1. WCW/AWA/WCCW shelves. 2. Classic WWF shelves. Hulkamania era -Tag Teams & Pre 80’s -New Generation/Attitude Era/RA - 3. Modern WWE/NXT shelves. NXT -Modern Main Roster - 4. AEW shelf. 5. Other Lines - Hasbro/Retro/Galoob/MotWWEU - Other than that with the exception of my Sting shelf I just try not to put the same wrestler on the same shelf. And if I have to them they are on opposite sides of it.

I used to mix all my figures up when I had a lot of them. I’ve resorted to minimally using my collection over the last year and a half. I just mainly stick to the Monday Night Wars roster alongside other figures I like. It makes it easier to categorize and collect what I want as opposed to just continuously buying figures for the hell of it. I have one WCW shelf and one Raw shelf. Then I’ve got some other figures I have duplicates of on another. One thing I’ve learned is that sometimes you might have to get rid of things, only buy what you intend to use or want in the long run. Another thing is, I realized I had a lot of attachment to things I didn’t care for in the long run.

Mixing eras sounds like chaos.

I display only and everything is organized chronologically by era. If I have a duplicate of a superstar I'll display them next to one another, unless a certain attire was worn in a different era. Hunter Hearst Helmsley to Triple H as an example.

I display my figs by era, but maybe once a week or so my 4 y/o daughter and I play. We mix everything, even a few princess bride toys have made it into a match. Her current tag champs(she uses the ecw tv and wcw tv titles) are Rey mysterio and Hulk Hogan.

I like mixing them. As a kid, the only thought I gave to WCW Galoob and WWF Hasbro was how awesome it would be in real life if guys like Sting could fight or tag with WWF stars! I had one story where surfer Sting (Galoob) came to Hulk Hogan's rescue from a beatdown by Andre the Giant and the Million Dollar Man. Figures gave me that chance to imagine matches that never happened in reality (or matches that eventually happened when these guys were past their primes). To me, that's the magic of collecting: all these characters get to remain timeless. So to me, keeping them in their times just misses out on so much fun.

I like to keep my figures in the attic and in my wardrobe as I have nowhere to put them.

Mixing, by far.
As a kid, when I first started collecting, the idea of "crossovers" between universes, timelines, & the characters within were always alluring, as it increased the "what if" storytelling, that was especially used in the comic book realm. This is notably possible now with WWE's acquisition of WCW, ECW, & the signing of Legend talents; coupled with other rival wrestling companies creating figures of their talents, to the same size as the leading organization. Being able to do fantasy booking, outside the realm of reality is something that has been enjoyable to me, at all times. =D

Mixing. To me it doesn't matter, however I like all the bodies to be mattel. I may put a jakks head on a custom if mattel never made it or if I simply feel it is better. I also like the idea of creating fantasy factions to pose together. I have Brock and Christian in the same group with Bret, Bulldog, Anvil, and Pillman. It is fun to imagine. and hey, they are toys and we all have our things that we love about collecting.

I display/keep all my SCSA, Kane, Undertaker, Rock, etc all together no matter the era that their attire is from.
What WCW/NWO figs I have I keep together as well.
I use have them split up based on their era of attire, but it’s just easier to keep all the same wrestlers together.

Mine are displayed by era and I try to surround each wrestler with as many of his/her rivals or teammates as possible. No fantasy is involved.

So, the rare times I do fig photography stuff, I tend to do things I think cool, era be damned. For display of my loose figures, I have a pretty rigid layout that's kind of real era based, but me about my personal life. Let me explain: So this is my main display right now (At the moment, I don't have real estate for my childhood Hasbro or Jakks figures): Top Shelf: Wrestlers who I initially became a massive fan of because of their work on the Indies outside of WWE from September 2006 onwards. Middle Shelf: Versions of wrestlers from any period in my life (and some times even before my time) to September 2006. Why September 2006? That's the month I started college and I still collect but "retired" my fig fed (truth be told more because I didn't have the time than any kind of embarrassment) So basically this shelf is made up of any looks that conceivably had they been made could have been in my fig fed. Bottom Shelf: Wrestlers I mainly associate with WWE in looks from September 2006 onwards. Generally, I try to keep factions together and sometimes even companies. For example, on the middle shelf the left hand side is all WWE looks from the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression eras, with DX posed together, Hardyz posed together, etc. The right hand side is early 1990s WWF, WCW, the Kliq, and misc. (SS96 Bret, ECW Cactus). Also, I have no issues displaying the same wrestler on a shelf. I do have one weird exception with Seth Rollins. I was a big fan of Age of the Fall and his work as Tyler Black so I have his first Sheild Elite on my Indies shelf, but his other figures are on the bottom WWE September 2006 and onwards shelf because I associate him so much more with WWE now. I also have this manically display with hyper-specific shelves: Top: Jazzwares AEW. Middle Mattel CM Punks Bottom: Ultimates style figures from all companies. So Mattels are there, Super 7s, and when I get some Supremes they'll be there as well.

My displays are a little of both
I have my 2006/2007 Raw, ECW & Smackdown shelves as realistic.
Then for shelves like my Legends, and Ex-WWE & AEW, it's a mix of sorts.

Wrestling runs together through time but I try to keep "Time Period" or at least promotions grouped.
