It's the holidays. What are your stories?
I love a lot of the homeless in my neighborhood. Some are crazier than others, but a lot of them are sweet. It's like I told my husband. I don't see love in giving someone government cheese. I think they should be treated with total grace, a lot so deep that they can learn to love themselves
I went to a gas station tonight to get a carton of cigarettes. This tall white guy with a tattoo on his face hears my speak, to which he jokingly mocks my high Southern drawl. Asked me if I was a flight attendant.
"No, but I thought about it!"
Asked if I'm a cop.
"No, but thought about it!! I just think it's immoral to write tickets or to do drug busts just to become a detective."
Then he's asking if he can hang out with me. "I'm married."
He asks what I do. I told him "I live like a nun except that I smoke."
"You're celibate?" "Hmm, I guess." "That's so cool!! Your husband?" "Guess he doesn't have a choice. We keep the curses away. I do books for God and Fatherland."
Then he asks for money. "Sure."
I couldn't withdraw $20 from the cashier limit but I gave him $10. What a sweet guy. Might go back there regularly and give him food for Thanksgiving
My heart is still warming two hours later. I don't want to shed tears over it though. I'm glad that he can hang out there with staff. Might give him $100 for Thanksgiving.
My husband thinks I'm harsh and judgmental. True! But he remarks that I'm really gentle with the poor. My view is that they're already on the street. It's time to stop asking about moral failings and to give them warmth. I wish he had asked for a prayer. I would have prayed for virtue against the cardinal sins so that an angel can guide his warmth onto a proper path and into the warmth of a bed
These experiences are very deep to me

I think you should offer the tall white man with a face tattoo a room in your home until he gets back on his feet! Shelter the homeless!

I never worked with the Homeless but I did do volunteer work at Catholic Social Services for my High School Senior Project. I used to pack food boxes there and take the boxes out to their cars sometimes. My mother likes to give panhandlers standing outside of Walmart a few dollars. They always say God Bless. My mother says they might be angels in disguise.
Years ago my city had a notorious homeless man who known to be an arsonist, nicknamed Slimmer. Slimmer once had a successful heating oil business but he lost it due to drug use. He would get thrown out of every establishment downtown since he was really fried out from drug use. He claimed he was a Marine veteran who served in Vietnam but that was proven false when someone beat the crap out of him for no reason a few years ago. A person I know who owned a restaurant who would throw him out for acting up in there stepped up to help him. There she reached out to some organization that helped veterans and there they discovered he never served in the military. I think they helped him anyway.
An owner of a local Pizzeria used to have positive things to say about Slimmer. He paid for his obituary when he died last year.

I'm no saint, funny enough, but I always stop and talk to anybody sleeping rough. I did a course with a Charity that has a kitchen open to anyone so I always point them in that direction so they can get a hot meal. When I smoked cigarettes (pre-Vape) I always offered and sat down and smoked with the person. I never asked any personal questions but just spoke to them for 5 minutes in passing. One of the many things in our country I'd change in a heartbeat is to end homelesness, I think we should be doing more to help and stop it.

I used to work with/around the homeless and have plenty of experiences both good and bad. There's genuine people out there who're down on their luck and attempting to better themselves, then there's people who, once you get to know them and their story, you realize they put themselves in the situation they're in. Usually it's drug/alcohol related issues, or something to do with them falling out with their families. Sometimes sadly, it's people with mental health issues who've been abandoned. Either way, whether they appear to be "scary", "dirty", or "intimidating" at times, they are human beings at the end of the day and deserve respect just as much as the next average joe.

Ah yes. It was early 1991. I had gone on a soul searching quest in Tobago. It was there where I first met my lover. We had gone off to harvest some wild honey. We soon became lost and after a few hours, we stumbled upon a homeless camp. More of a shanty town, if you will. The locals didn't like strangers, and brought us to the town Elders to decide our fate. Through very crude hand gestures & body language, it was to be determined that we would be stripped of our possessions. I recognized the gestures & was delighted to find out one of the Elders took the same mime course I did in Paris under the great Marcel Marceau. He said if we entertained them, they would show mercy on us. I took out my hammer dulcimer and started playing some freeform Brazilian jazz. My lover came in and did her interpretative dance of the seven veils. When we had finished our concert, the Elders were brought to tears. They voted to slaughter their only goat for a feast in our favor. Hours later, our bellies full of 3 pounds of roasted goat flesh, my lover and I had coitus. One of the Elders cut down a nearby yucca tree and made a carving of my lover and myself mid-coitus. It is a carving we both hold dear and we keep it in our tree fort in the small piece of property we own in the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland.

Well, I've encountered some homeless people a lot, some good, some bad. The one person I had was real bad, he had mental problems. This was 5 years ago, I've seen this guy since October, he's stared at me sometimes and a lot. I could see him reading a book, he always was reading this book and doing this chant with his hands, In December of 2017, I tried to record what he was saying but he stared me down and yelled at me threatening to end my life and calling me a little boy. I was literally scared and angry at the same time. Let's just say he wanted to be left alone, I've heard that he was very much a mean person. January, I saw him try to fight somebody at a Subway WalMart. Somebody said something to him, So I just let it go. I could've reported this to the cops, but I would be frightened of what he would do to me if I did. In the Summer of 2018, He started wearing all White, had a White Bandana on his forehead, And there would be some times when he would be on and off again, Then September of 2018. He threatened somebody else and had the cops called on him. I saw him arrested by the police, I saw his mugshots years later. He was arrested 5 times for trespassing, assault, disturbing the peace and obstruction of justice. That day when I saw him get locked up. I thought to myself "Well somebody damn sure put him in his place". I've seen people arrested in my school like Teenagers and also when there would be a high chase or if someone was pulled over for stuff like that. I could see him beg and plead, Then 2019. I saw him again at Starbucks, he threatened an old dude who tried to give him food. That could've been my opportunity to not be afraid and call him out but I just let it go. All the times I wanted to hold back to fight him. I could've been in jail myself, but I let it go. That's the last time I saw him. I saw him numerous times before the pandemic in 2020 and that was it. I don't know where he could be, for all I know he could be locked up, in a psychiatric hospital, or maybe he moved out for good. But let's just say that day when I was threatened by him in December of 2017. It was a bad experience for me. I've had Bad Experiences like High School when a girlfriend broke up with me and I was depressed for 2 months, but this was fear & anger when he said that to me. Do I still hold that grudge?, Yes I do. But Do I wish him the best if he's still around?. Sure do. But you don't wanna make me angry. That Homeless person made me angry, feared and bitter.

I work for a retail store and if there's extra food such as sandwiches getting thrown out that night, I'll bag a handful and give them to any homeless people outside the shop or on my way home. We also have a Costa machine and I'll give them free hot drinks without paying for it myself either.

What was your first clue. I assume you work in a supermarket. You're going to get caught out soon enough with cameras.

I think you should offer the tall white man with a face tattoo a room in your home until he gets back on his feet! Shelter the homeless! Hi! Sorry for the late response. Had to break out of some depression, meditate for a few days, then shop for Thanksgiving. Did a seance Friday. That takes a lot out of me. Injured my rotator cuff last year after 5 days. Nothing bad I would offer him a place. We have a terrible landlord. He's one of those who tries to evict people. Our neighbor (to whom we lend money whenever he needs it) is also a snitch. We're going to stay here for the next five years until we are ready to buy a home. We did house a prostitute one night. I was leaving the bar wasted. Saw her trying to get a score, or whatever that's called, with 4 guys. She was really aged. We took her in for the night and gave her the food we could. It's too bad though. Once we get that new home with a much bigger kitchen, I'm thinking about training volunteer cooks for us to make massive Strombolis, whole grain pasta, and foods that can keep them going I read about MAID, which is a euthanasia program in Canada. Some who are homeless or risking homelessness are signing up. That's disturbing to me. Not only is it a war on the unfortunate but it's a war against life and hope.

An owner of a local Pizzeria used to have positive things to say about Slimmer. He paid for his obituary when he died last year. That's really sweet. Some can be a bit extreme for sure. I remember one vividly who used to harass people, break out in dances, scream and shout instead. He once touched me inside the coffee shop while I was studying, asking me to put YouTube on for him. I got a cold a few days later. I wouldn't be surprised if he's in prison now. He was that explosive. Kind of reminded me of what Kayne West would be if he wasn't a savant lol I suspect a lot of homeless guys lie about military service. Schizophrenics are insightful about society's failings. They still seem stuck in the Cold War back when the FBI and CIA meant something in ways that they now don't. (I think the Cold War spurred the UFO subculture too.) Not that schizos lie about their service, but I think really crazy people get impressed by violence. As such, they see the adulation directed to types like Chris Kyle and imagine themselves in some weird way having either been in the military or outright fabricating it. Says a lot about our institutional culture

Smoking is a sin you phony Depends on who you ask. It's generally not a sin to Catholics. God isn't a workforeman, Christmas tree, sports better, domestic violence coach, or a public health adviser. God isn't like "I commandeth that ye drink two cups of coffee per day." Drug use should not get in the way of one's faculty. Nicotine use generally doesn't. It's debatable if Marijuana does (I think it does). Alcohol use is frowned upon in excess, even if it's not sinful to be used in social settings.

When I moved to Los Angeles, first thing I saw when I left the bus into the neighborhood was someone digging in a back alley dumpster for food. No one even blinked. I had never seen anything like that in my life What you did alone is a lot. The homeless are invisible except when people complain about their existence. The alienation and loneliness no doubt can make them even more eradicate. Just treating them as human goes a long ways. A few years ago, I met this woman. She had a small bit of facial hair from probably not having done anything hygienic in years. (It's possible that she was a trans male kicked outside, but I didn't ask. Facial hair isn't common even when homeless.) I offered her my Stromboli. She was really nervous, asking if I poisoned it. Definitely schizophrenic. She ate it though.

Alcohol is the worst. Much as I hate my brother for very legitimate (and criminal) reasons, it was surreal to hear from dry vomit in the bathroom maybe 8 feet from where I slept. You can't help him. He has too much pride. He's also obsessed with vanity (money, prestige, glory) that has nothing to do with his own concept of self but what impresses others. I don't know what causes alcoholism, but that was it for him. He's only a few years older than me and he looks about 55 I'm glad Kevin Nash said what he said recently on his podcast about his son. Booze is the worst
