Hello chaps - I hope you are all well.
My wife and I are coming to New York from the U.K. next weekend for our 20th anniversary. We are doing the whole tourist schtic (and are very excited about it!) but we also have a day of nothing planned We’d quite like to do some US shopping at stores we don’t have on the U.K. (target, Walmart, 5 below, goodwill, comic/toy stores etc).
Is there anywhere you can recommend that is within about an hour of travel from Times Square (our hotel is about a ten minute walk) by public transport?
Any and all recommendations would be welcome 🤘

Ahh, fellow New Yorker here. I'd recommend if you like pizza to try a place called Difara's for pizza in Brooklyn, BBQ Chicken in Koreatown for some great fried chicken dishes. There's also this small winter shop (think of small little shops that sell goods) in Bryant Park which is super close to Times Square. They have a ice skating rink there. I would try Krispy Kreme donuts too. There's a lot of things you could do. If you like rock climbing there's two indoor parks on 125st in Harlem. If you need any other suggestions, I'd be more than willing to help. Hope you have a nice visit in my city.

I prefer the stores all around Rockefeller center area. Also a good spot to just walk around.

If you see anybody handing out CDs, avoid them. They'll try and get you to take it then they'll ask for money.

Go to 33rd street, hop on the PATH to Hoboken, NJ, and take a walk along the Hudson to see a stunning view of the NYC skyline It's about a 20-25 minute PATH ride Times Square is hell for natives but I get why it's "must-see" for tourists. Rule of thumb: do not accept "free" CDs from "rappers" (these people can be violent and may try a common scam where they drop the CD and suggest you bumped into them and made them drop it, thus demanding $$$); do not talk to any of the "monks" that hand out little bullcrapcrosses or symbols (they're in monk robes and very easy to spot); do not take pictures with any of the various people dressed in costumes as they will want $$$ I don't think there's a Walmart in the area but you will certainly hit Target and Five Below. I would recommend Midtown Comics (there's one in the TSQ area and one across from Grand Central) and check out Book Off on W45th (there's also a model train store a few stores down that's very old school NY).

It maybe be rude, but 9/10 it's for some bs... Everyone in NYC knows that. Also, don't make eye contact with people on the trains either. Btw, there's an excellent taco place by times square called LOS Tacos no.1. The food is fantastic and feels like an authentic service in Mexico, only problem it's sort of a tourist spot.

I would suggest going to the Metropolitan Museum while in NYC.

I was recently in NYC and I made sure to bring my kids to Macy's. It's the largest store in the world and it's quite the sight and worth the visit. It takes up an entire city block and I think it's 8 stories tall. There is a toy section but sadly they did not have any wrestling figures. If you're a fan of Harry Potter, that store is within walking distance and it's worth the visit. There's a Lego store near the Harry Potter store which had a lot of great stuff.
Times Square is worth the visit for the visuals but the amount of people can be a bit overwhelming.

Manhattan is filled with places to visit/stuff to do. When it comes to shopping though, Macy's is great. There is a Nordstrom Rack 4 mins away from Macy that should be good. TJ Maxx on 19th street might be the best TJ Maxx there is in the area. If you would like to shop premium, 5th avenue starting from 50th street is the place you would like to be. If you would like other recommendations, please let me know

Keep your wallet in your front pocket and tell the wife not to carry a big purse. I've seen way too many people get pickpocketed and hands going into purses. Yeah it doesn't matter how tightly they are held onto, that the thief's occupation and they are really good at their jobs.
And take a picture outside Madison Square Garden. It's the mecca for sports entertainment. lol

This is advice a person from ny wouldn’t even give you because it’s just common sense there. So true

I just got back from a trip to New York about 2 weeks ago. Some things I highly recommend are the Summit at One Vanderbilt, Ignazio's in Brooklyn had some good pizza, Liberty Bagels on 5th Ave was fantastic - genuinely the nicest coffee I've ever had in my life. Also Strawberry Fields in Central Park is a nice place to chill, especially if you like The Beatles/John Lennon. If you can get tickets to a show, I'd recommend that too - I saw Chicago and it was fantastic.
As others said, don't stop for the people in costumes, or take anything that people are handing out for "free" cause chances are it won't be.
I was only able to hit the Target by Macy's while I was there and their wrestling selection was literally one Ultimate Edition Jeff Hardy and one Red Velvet Unmatched figure, but there's a couple other Targets around I'm pretty sure.

As if it wasn't worthless enough.

I like when they offer to autograph them for you. As if it wasn't worthless enough. You should of said no one pays for CDs anymore. Legally, they can't sell you those CDs, so they're looking for a "donation". I remember once in high school a friend was stopped and was handed a CD. The guy autographed it and then dropped the CD. My friend picked it up and the guy told him to empty his pockets. Afterwards, realizing that my friend had no money he started to curse us out. Had another incident where my younger cousin was given a CD, he said he had no money and said guy was pissed. My baby cousin walked out with a free CD. Needless to say, I played it at home and one of the tracks had the original "Na, na, na Batman" theme as a crapty rap song LoL. Good times Btw, before you leave, please get one of these. You'll be New York certified

Favorite nyc story is I was tripping on acid walking back to our air bnb after dark, solo style. And I had to pass these basket ball courts to get back. Like 30 thug ass dudes were just posted up on the bleachers all gambling and chilling. Some of them noticed me and said “hey white boy! Bet you won’t come over here!” And I just shouted back “ no I won’t,” luckily they found that funny and all were cracking up. I just picture the joke not landing and being chased down the block 😂
