What event / date is when the Attitude Era kicked off?
I was just watching WM 14 (1998) and was wondering if people think it's before then?

People say 1997 but I would call it the pilot of The Attitude Era.
It truly began the night after WM14, that's when things felt different.
For me it ended the night Vince bought WCW.

Seeds were planted in 1997
Stone Cold ushered it in at Wrestlemania XIV
It ended at Wrestlemania X7 when Stone Cold turned heel and it was The Rocks last day as a full-time wrestler on the road.

Wrestlemania 14 to Wrestlemania 17. A 3 year wrestling odyssey. The greatest era in the history of the sport. Never before, never again.

Saying WM14 is a cop out.
And blatantly disregards all of the TV-14 stuff that was happening months before with Austin flipping people off, Bret's outburts and of course the risque antics of DX and even the NAO.
After WM14 yes it did pick up, but you could argue that immediately after WM14 it wasn't an overnight change. It was still gradual for weeks after, it just progressed quicker and quicker.
And the start of the progression was definitely in 1997.
So to say WM14 is trying to put a cute, neat little bow on it and a stake in the ground and claiming that was the start, when actually it was shades of grey WAAAAAY before that.

I used to think the Pillman’s got a gun angle but will go with WM14 as well.
The year 97 was so unique that it deserves to stand alone.

I've always thought it started at Survivor Series '97 with the Screwjob and the Vince McMahon on screen heel character starting to take shape. Plus, the lead up to Wrestlemania with Austin and Tyson and the antics of DX. Wrestlemania 14 you can say it truly started but you can't disregard the months leading up to the payoff of Austin winning the title and going straight into his stuff with Vince.
I do agree that if you wanna put and end point on it then definitely Wrestlemania 17 is logical. Once WCW was dead (and the Invasion angle doesn't count) you had a weird period during 2001 where it wasn't really anything, it was just there. Once the Invasion angle was done and we moved to the brand split the RA era begun.
That's my opinion at least.

I dont think there is a definite start....I would personally say SSeries 97 to SSeries 01. Raw felt VERY different after those events.....

The Montreal Screwjob. Bret was the New Generation and that night was the official end of one era and the beginning of the next.

I’d put it around mid/late 97 start. Ended basically at WM 18 or shortly before

I agree with you on this!
I always that the New Generation started the day Bret Hart won the WWF Title and ended the day he lost it for the final time at Survivor Series 97.
The following night on Raw, the Attitude Era had begun. Stuff Road Dogg and Billy Gunn were doing, DX being around, Austin feuding with the Nation, it all had more of an "attitude" to it than before.
As it ending at Survivor Series 2001, I can agree with that. The war was over with WCW/ECW and the WWF and I just don't mean that in story line but just in general with Vince owning all three promotions.

I mean the mere fact that the WWF scratch logo was born in late 1997 and they started branding the "attitude" logos and concept shortly after Survivor Series 1997 tells you all you need to know about when it truly began.

I thought they had a small promo that had "Attitude. Come Get Some" not long after the Survivor Series 97. It definitely felt like late 97 was the start. If it were a fictional TV show the end of one season would be Bret being screwed and the next season would the Vince/JR sit down with seeds of Vince being outed as the evil owner.

I dunno why people don't recognize Bret Hart's involvement in this, he was the first to feud vs Vince (which turned real) he cursed on tv, he started shooting on the mic, with Pillman's antics aswell I believe the Hart Foundation is really important to this, if it weren't for them DX would not have formed in the way they did. WM13 was the one were it started to change IMO, then once Austin won the belt it was in full force, HBK was in it a tad longer than Hitman and they say he was a major part of it...
Also when we talk about Attitude Era does this include WCW/ECW who were also edgier at the time? Or what do we call their eras??

I start it with the beginning of 1997. To me 1996 was the end of the New Generation Era and the start of the transition era. By 1997 they had started changing the storylines to be more realistic, even darker. Austin was emerging at the beginning of 1997, Bret's outburst before WrestleMania, Undertaker going goth, Mick Foley creating the three faces of Foley, HBK & HHH characters changed, DX started, more blood was being shown. 1997 was the start of the attitude era, and 2001 was the end.
For me the eras go: 1984-1988: Rock and Wrestling, Hulk-a-Mania Era 1989-1992: Later Hulk-a-Mania, Dominance Era 1993-1996: New Generation Era 1997-2001: Attitude Era 2001-2004: Transitional Era 2005-2008: Ruthless Aggression Era 2008-2011: PG Era 2012-2015: Reality Era Not sure beyond that...

RA era had to have started in 02. This is when McMahon coined the phrase
