24 years ago today “Big Sexy” Kevin Nash jackknifed Goldberg into oblivion and ended his undefeated streak to become WCW Champion.
Most agree it was the wrong time to beat Goldberg, and the follow up helped lead to WCW’s downfall, but I’m curious everyone’s thoughts on the match and feud itself. Was Nash the right one to beat him? Should Goldberg have continued on undefeated?
Nash was over big at the time no doubt, and the fans in attendance popped big for his win, but the way it was done and follow up with the finger poke of doom always kills it for me. I don’t think it was the right time to do it, but I’ve also never been 100% against Nash being the one to beat Goldberg either.

i hated it just because i knew nash was doing the booking for it at the time
gee, let me be the one to end the streak. how convenient.
honestly, it should have never ended.

Probably not the best decision to have Nash do it. They probably should have saved the first loss for putting over a new talent or pushing a new guy in the main event scene. I'm still kind of surprised it wasn't Hogan to get his win back, I guess he didn't want to wrestle him again.

Nash was super over and I don't mind him winning though I find the taser thing dumb
I wouldn't mind DDP or Steiner ending it.

Have Steiner go over Goldberg, even by cheating, would have helped him move into the upper echelon. They should have had Steiner going over everyone on the WCW roster for a year to build him up, then defeat Goldberg. Steiner could have held the belt for a while then lose it back to Goldberg later.

Yep. Listen I like Hogan and Flair but they weren't guys who people wanted to see top of card in 1999. Frankly Hogan's NWO shtick had run thin here. (I thought I was on a different topic here lol)
If you wanna have NWO Wolfpack at this time with Nash, Hall, Konnan, Luger that's fine but the main NWO was a bit tiring at this point

Yeah, I think they could have turned Hogan back face at this time by having NWO Wolfpac turn on him and kick him out of the group. Him and Nash could have been a big rivalry at the time, while Goldberg was having his run as WCW champion. A lot of the guys like Hogan, Piper, Flair, and Macho, should have been used as attractions to pop crowds and fill out PPV cards. This also should have been the time for WCW to start pushing some of the younger talent like Jericho, Guerrero, Benoit, Booker, DDP, Steiner, Malenko, Mysterio, etc. to the main event scene. WCW really needed to start making new stars at the top of the card, it may have saved the company in the long run.

No doubt Nash was over, as proven by the giant pop he got for beating Goldberg, but I agree with those that feel he wasn’t the right choice to do it. If WCW was going with Nash, it should have been a clean win and no “finger poke of doom” crap following this. Give Nash a run with the belt and have him eventually face Goldberg in a big rematch.
My personal pick would have been Steiner, but it’s not like WCW did a great job booking him as this unstoppable monster in 1998. It wasn’t until 1999 that we started to see Scott play more into his “unhinged” gimmick. If they go with Steiner, IMO Goldberg needs to continue his title run well into 1999 so they could properly build Steiner.
DDP is the other option IMO. Aways the crafty-underdog, DDP gave Goldberg the best match of his career and would have been believable in ending the streak by hitting a Diamond Cutter out of nowhere.
Other dark-horses IMO are Booker T, Benoit, or Bret. Booker and Benoit would need more time to be built like Steiner, but could have been made-men by beating Goldberg and cornerstones for the company going forward. As for Bret, despite his horrible booking for the get go, was still seen by fans as a credible threat to anyone. Give Bret a few wins before meeting Goldberg and it’s not hard to see him as the veteran knocking off Bill.
Was Nash the worst choice? No, not IMO. It everything surrounding the ending of the match and the follow up that messed everything up IMO.

Yep having Nash beat Goldberg then lose title week later in Fingerpoke of Doom to Hogan was so stupid
then at the JAN PPV, Hogan isn't on the card, Nash isn't on the card. You have Goldberg beat Hall for payback which is fine but then you stick him with BAM BAM, which should have been a Nitro match. Though Goldberg going off to do a movie did hurt momentum, that was a mistake

Bret definitely would have been an interesting option, but they screwed that up with the horrible booking they did for Bret throughout 1998. Had he been built as a credible threat to Hogan up to the point when Hogan lost the belt to Goldberg, and they didn't turn him heel to join Hogan and the NWO in the fall of 1998, he could have been a great option as the underdog/crafty veteran to beat Goldberg. Had they built Bret as the new NWO killer in WCW from the time he entered WCW until his matches with Goldberg for the title, and maybe even given him a few matches with Hogan where he almost wins the belt but doesn't because of NWO interference, he would have looked like a credible threat to beat Goldberg.

In a perfect world Bret wouldve been the ideal option but alas...
I didnt have a prob with Nash but the way they booked it was dumb as hell.Have em take 3 powerbombs but no they had to use a taser in overbooked WCW fashion.Dont get me started on the aftermath
Like Starrcade 97, Another nail in the coffin of WCW here.

Agreed on how it should have ended. I’ve never been against Nash beating Goldberg. He was over big in 1998 and a believable challenger. If you’re going to beat Goldberg, do it clean. Nash was a veteran and former WWF Champ. He had enough credibility to beat Goldberg. Have him win with multiple power bombs and then give him a run for a bit before his rematch with Goldberg down the line.

The beginning of the end for WCW. The undefeated streak couldve lasted 6 more months and it shouldve been ended by someone who couldve used the rub like Scott Steiner or Booker T.

Literally everything about how they did it was wrong. Just have Goldberg lose clean and then have to work his way up the ladder beating challengers with the months long goal of gaining the title back. The dirty stupid finish, coupled with the finger poke of doom, the rape allegations, and the continuous other storylines to distract him from getting revenge made Goldberg look so dumb.

DDP should have ended it at Halloween Havoc. The way it ended and the aftermath showed WCW didn’t know what to do with Goldberg without the streak. Was the guys entire gimmick. DDP should have ended it and Goldberg should have moved to the midcard.

Stupid decision solely based off who beat him, how and the aftermath that followed.
They had no idea what to do with Goldberg after it and he took a backseat to Hogan and NWO, much like everyone else did.
And I say this as a fan of Kevin Nash.
Had they had DDP do it at Halloween Havoc it still would’ve sucked because only the live crowd would’ve seen the finish.

Nash beats Goldberg with help from Hall Nash drops to Hogan, fingerpoke of doom
Goldberg says "nah not on my watch, your days are over with Hogan" Goldberg goes through NWO,beats Hogan cleanly gets title. Nash, Hall, Steiner, Konnan jump Hogan, Hogan out of NWO, turns face, helps Goldberg fend off NWO.

Though Nash would be the front-runner for new leader, Scott Steiner wouldn't be a bad option. It would help push him to the top of the card.
