Howdy folks,
thought I would throw my hat in the ring with another one of these.
We have looked at WWF VHS tapes, but today I am thinking about the epic documentaries that the WWE used to offer. There are a ton of great ones out there, but for this list it does not have to be just official WWE or WWF ones, go for whatever ones you want!
Here are my picks,
Beyond The Mat: The first time I saw Beyond the Mat was on a video CD bootleg that I bought at the Glasgow Barras Market which I played on my PlayStation! I then ended up with the VHS and now in my collection, I have the DVD. This was just so amazing at the time and I think that it still holds up to this day. I love the stuff with Mick Foley and Terry Funk here, but it is one of those movies/documentaries that just zooms by. No matter how many times I have watched this it never gets old. I still cannot believe that Vince allowed this to happen!
The Rise and Fall of ECW: Around the mid to late 00s was when the WWE was really hitting their stride with their documentaries and this one is just great. I like all of the ones that the have done on promotions, WCW, AWA and WCCW, but it is the ECW one that I feel is the best. It is just so well made and it is awesome getting so much behind the scenes information of what went down here. I also feel that this was before the WWE went over board trying to rewrite history so that it fits their narrative like they are pretty guilty of doing these days.
Wrestling With Shadows: I am not exaggerating when I say that I was completely stunned the first time I watched this! It is arguably the most compelling story that has ever been told and the behind the scenes access that Bret and the film crew had here is just amazing. I just ate this whole thing up, it actually aired on regular TV (on the BBC I think) over here in the UK, but I eventually picked up the DVD. The one I have now is a special anniversary edition that comes with a DVD about Owen Hart that is a pretty good watch too.
Bret Hitman Hart: Bret Hart has had a few releases, but I am talking about the first 3 disc set here. I never thought that Bret Hart would have anything to do with the WWE ever again. Getting this documentary as well as his Classic Superstars figures at the time was just amazing. I think that with this DVD they do a wonderful job of retelling his career, I have always felt that Bret was a great storyteller in and out of the ring and that is showcased here. Him talking about his cage match with Owen and how he wanted to protect him with the superplex is just heartbreaking stuff each time I watch it.
A few honorable mentions are,
The Triumph and Tragedy Of WCCW
Heroes of World Class
The Spectacular Legacy of the AWA
The Monday Night War
WrestleMania the Movie (about WrestleMania XIX, came with the WM20 DVD)
ok, I have to stop here as I had a list of about 20 honorable mentions!
