This isn't to piggyback off of the "Mick Foley - your overall thoughts" thread. This was a legitimate thought that's been growing in my mind since I've been watching Raws in 1999.
The Rock starts off as a hot heel, funny, cocky, gets an emotional reaction from the crowd. Top of his game.
Then his face turn was very well received, and he has the crowd in the palm of his hand still. But after a few months, by August or sooner, I started noticing he was either repeating a lot of what he's previously said - eg: 26/08/99 the debut of Smackdown his promo to HHH saying "You call yourself the Game? Well quite frankly, your game absolutely sucks", then on 20/09/99, he says literally the exact same promo.
Another is "do you think you impress the Rock [insert insult to particular wrestler here]".....
And then the whole sticking things up candy asses.... After a few weeks, it becomes repetitive. And bear in mind I'm saying this by 4 months into his face turn. I haven't watched his whole face schtick beyond this.
Now I have heard some criticism before, and also of his wrestling ability, but I haven't really got a gauge of what you guys think of his spiel.

I thought he was really good on the mic; he had natural charisma which eventually won over the audience. But I was never a fan of his in-ring work, to me he was average in the ring. He sometimes oversold things to the point of it being ridiculous.
I think my favorite thing from him was while he was still a heel, he went into his usual know your roll... line, then all of a sudden, the fans started chanting along with him, he stopped them by saying something like no, no, no, you boo the Rock, you shout the Rock sucks, you can't chant with the Rock... I thought that was so well done to keep him a heel, but in the end, I think it made the fans like him even more.

Not in my top favs list but I was still a fan overall. Entertaining promos plus the feuds he had with Austin,Trips,Foley etc was great stuff
Still amazing looking back how he turned his career around when he joined the Nation. After that you could see the star he would become

I always thought he was good, but I really didn’t care for him during the attitude era, but over the years since I grew to appreciate his work during the attitude era.

Definitely a fan but my main guy's during that era was Sting,Austin,Savage,Outsiders and DDP then Rock.
Far as in ring definitely not a man of a 1,000 holds a majority of the time delivered a good match.

I love The Rock. There was just something cool about the way he carried himself. The man was cocky, funny, confident and most importantly entertaining. I don't think he was my favorite worker, but he made wrestling look fun. Him and Austin just had that chemistry like Batman and Joker. I also think The Rock was definitely one of the best on the mic too. There are some guys who are super great at wrestling, but when they get on the mic you just want to flip the channel. BTW, the people's elbow is one of the most ridiculous moves ever.

I will say just slightly over rated...simply for the fact that people put him on the "mount rushmore" of wrestling all the time. Ask yourself this, when was The Rock "The Guy"? Rocky Miavia? Nope....Nation? Nope...Corporate Rock? Nadda...He was fantastic in all his roles but the only time that he could say he was "The Guy" was in 2000 when Austin was injured. Once Austin returned, he was "The Guy" again.
Its not to discredit what Rock did...Macho Man was never really "the guy" because he was in an era of Hulk Hogan. We dont discredit how great he was but very few actually put him on a mount rushmore list too.

Not at all. His mic work and ability to hold a crowd in the palm of his hand is better than anyone else. However, I also think his in ring work is actually very underrated he has a whole portfolio of exciting matches to his name. He could pretty much work with anyone and make it entertaining.
He's truly one of the greatest of all time to me.

I believe Rock had overtaken him & I always felt that played into Austin decision to turn heel. He was getting stale.

Also, I get that some people feel he relied on the same schtick a lot. However, whenever you saw The Rock live, you wanted to see the greatest hits! It would be like going to see Bon Jovi and them not doing Living on a Prayer.

The Rock is literally the biggest star to ever come out of professional wrestling, I don’t even know how he could be considered the slightest bit overrated.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Rock, I was/am a big fan. He was definitely talented and could hold the crowd. But the point I'm making is through watching these shows again and seeing the same verbiage week in week out - how could that be seen as creative?
There are many instances of wrestlers saying/doing the same thing time and time again and getting criticised for sticking to the same thing. So why is this different for the Rock?

Did you live in this area the rock was over as hell yeah looking back now he was doing the same things each week but Bret hart also did John cena did and now Roman does don’t put the rock as some one being overrated I wrote my reasons why in the post. I did live during that era and loved him during that time. But that's irrelevant. John Cena didn't do the exact same promo every week. Neither does Roman. I'm talking from a creative standpoint - the Rock did much of the same thing week in week out and I don't see people mentioning this. But then some fans bring up other wrestlers doing something repeatedly and criticise them for it.

When it comes to wrestling everyone is "Repetitive"
Austin, DX, Cena, Jericho. They came out and basically said the exact same thing all the time so it's unfair to highlight The Rock.
Say what you want about him but he had the crowd in the palm of his hand.
