It seems crazy to think that the year 2001 didn’t even have a HIAC match and I believe that it still stands til this day as the only year since 97 not to have the match take place... from 2002 til 2022 we’ve seen it take place at least once or multiple times a year plus in 97,98,99, 2000 etc.
Anyways if you were to have at least one HIAC match in 2001, what would it be?
I’d say Austin vs Angle could have got one, if HHH didn’t get injured then we could have got Austin vs HHH inside HIAC at SummerSlam, maybe Austin vs Rock at Backlash if Rocky stayed an extra month post WM17.

I would’ve liked to see rock/hhh as they had a great feud that never fully met a conclusion.
also, HHH vs Jeff Hardy for the IC title. could’ve made Jeff.

Triple H vs. Austin at No Way Out 2001 should have been a HIAC for the third match in those three stages.
Instead it was just a normal cage match. They missed a huge chance there.

Yup I had copped onto this around the time of the Cell dvd being released. I think Austin vs HHH should have been a cell match full stop. It was always the ultimate feud decider and my God it didn't get much hotter than their feud.
That being said? I liked the 3 stages of hell concept...felt fresh.
The other place I see one for it is at Survivor Series 2001.

Looking back at Survivor Series 2001, Vince missed a golden opportunity to have Team WWF vs. Team Alliance done in a War Games match.
Imagine that, the WWF team defeating the WCW guys in a War Games match that was invented in WCW. That would be the ultimate icing on the cake for a WWF win.
But Vince was too arrogant to allow a WCW match at his PPV then.

The best option has been mentioned a few times, but Austin/Triple H in the blow off to their feud would have been the perfect candidate. I could have seen Angle/Austin, but it wouldn't have been on the same scale for me. Interesting fact though, I've never really thought of that.

Now it's kind of a joke match compared to what it was in the WWF and early WWE years. Mostly meaningless.

Remember Angle saying the no mercy main event was planned for him vs Austin in the cell after unforgiven but RVD getting very over with the fans made vince add him to the match

Instead of the little tournament, at Vengeance have Austin/Rock/Jericho/Angle in the Cell.

Austin/HHH at No Way Out - but I wouldn't trade their 3 stages match for anything else.

I feel like anything that those two were capable of doing in the cage was what they were capable of doing in the cell. Neither man was taking some kind of crazy bump through or off that thing so there really wouldn't have been much of a difference in my opinion. Interesting fact regardless.
