So back in 2006, Kenny Omega was in WWE developmental, having signed with the company. He was in a similar situation to CM Punk, during roughly the same time period. Kenny was sent to Atlanta, Deep South Wrestling, and Punk was sent to Louisville, OVW, to go under the tutelage of the great Paul Heyman (who had recently came in to replace Jim Cornette).
We all know Punk and Heyman created a strong bond that carried into ECW, and later Heyman managing Punk from 2012-2013.
Kenny didn't have it so well in DSW. I believe that was where he mentioned abuse from Bill DeMott, and I don't think he got much of a push in DSW. I know he had at least one match with Heath Slater. I don't believe he won any belts in DSW, and he either left or was released before being called up to the WWE. Of course, as we all know, he ends up going to ROH for a great run (as well as other indies and Japanese promotions like PWG, DDT, etc.), before becoming part of the Bullet Club/Elite in NJPW, and having an absolutely legendary run there, and coming back to ROH for even more impressive go-around. He made so much history that he and his pals formed the biggest threat to the WWE since WCW, All Elite Wrestling.
But what if the roles had been reversed? I won't get into Punk going to DSW. I think history would have still played out similarly, though he may have knocked heads verbally with DeMott at some point (both have pretty big personalities).
But what about Kenny? How do you think Paul would have used him? Do you think his experience would have possibly brought him up to being OVW Champion, and being called up to the WWE for a successful run? What if he were still in the WWE today, all those years later? Would he have had dream matches with Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, John Cena, Roman Reigns, and the rest? Or would his run in the WWE system been just as short no matter what?
